A, why is this even hard

Azmo23 - 2014-06-28

how about this:
CHOOSE
a) 3 of your closest friends and family at random are killed
b) 300 random people are killed
c) a fatal morphine overdose for yourself

for me B is an easy choice, but I guess some people ascribe to some sort of greater social utility that would have them selecting C

that dude can really roll some Rs

memedumpster - 2014-06-28

B is the grossly monstrous and completely unethical and immoral choice.

A is less worse than B because B exists as an option, but is still utterly shitty compared to C.

C is the only choice that makes you not a terrible person by the world's standards.

It seems most mass shootings start firmly in B in the name of A and degenerate by the end to C as a kind of fear of consequence reflex.

None of these choices are valid in the real world.

exy - 2014-06-28

Oh, I agree C is the moral choice (in both scenarios). I'd spend more time waffling between B & C on Azmo's trilemma, because I'm not a big fan of pain.

I would assume the tester is lying about that last bit and I'd try flim flammery. If I am correct, the best possible outcome is assured and we're all OK. If I am not, punishment is distributed equally across all bodies, the end result being death for all of us. I can't be responsible for the tester's frankly psychopathic behaviour but that doesn't mean I have to play along with it.

memedumpster - 2014-06-28

Sort of in line with Oscar's idea, you could apply both A AND B, since I don't think your family and friends would be down with you saying "I just killed 300 random people... for you guys." So at least give them something to say to the angry mob that will inevitably come for you head. They can empathize with their rage, but call for a bit of time for understanding, and as survivors they don't have to share a constant guilt, since some of them paid. That way, they might buy you time so you can work on your "I had godlike powers, a fear of death, and I reacted" defense when the mob breaks through the barricade.

I think society would understand more if you had to pick out 300 people on purpose, because they would at least consider assuming most to half of them had it coming. It's the random killing that will create the angry mob.

Fuck C, that's the only option the survivors get, baby.

If someone else is pulling the lever, insist you picked C, but they did A and B to be jerks.

Completely moral.

Azmo, they said specifically you can't weasel your way out of the question. Or else...
