It's a bit like repainting Warhol's soup cans to make them look more like soup cans.

One technical point, however. The old trek's color palette worked well with the often oversaturated CRT displays of the period. So the lavender planet in the preload, for example, would shimmer and glow on a CRT. The new edit looks muddy and muted in comparison. A few of the new effects work, like the improved agonizer. But the lack of color is a real boner killer.

The only movie I thought ever benefited from this treatment was Lucas's THX1138. The original is a solid Sci Fi classic, and the new edit really helps the film to pop visually without undercutting the story.

What the fuck does this have to do with Glenn Miller?

Albuquerque Halsey - 2014-07-01

i love how you say "crt" insead of television.

Needtodestroy - 2014-07-01

Nice to know I'm not alone in regards to THX-1138. It was honed very well and was afforded room to breathe with the remaster.

Coax_Current - 2014-07-03

No the director's cut of THX-1138 was terrible. The added car scenes, making lizards and rats into CG aliens, including a bunch of CG apes... the improvements in color and clarity didn't outweigh Lucas' extra crap. It pops like a sore thumb.

memedumpster - 2014-07-03

Yeah, those CG ape things climbing the pillars really looked cheap. It made the little furry dwarf dude seem pointless.

Lurchi - 2014-07-01

what I call a BAD IDEA

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-07-01

This is what it is. I put this up because I was tired of talking about it. Don't know if I really like it or am just pleasantly surprised that it's not more terrible.

I didn't really mind the Star Wars remasters when they first came out. At the time you either knew someone with a laserdisc player or rented the old VHS that had been checked out thousands of times. The adding of songs and shit like that was horrible, but you have to admit that the Death Star exploding looked way cooler after the edits.

The difference here is the timing: we have the new shiny Star Trek movies and plenty of newer series. As such, Star Trek and its' effects have always seemed more like a time capsule. What blew our parents' minds looked silly to us kids, and the next generation probably chuckle at TNG.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-07-01

I'm okay with this because I think the Star Trek Fandom is such that two versions will be supported. If there was a danger of the original version being lost, I'd be a lot more troubled by this.

The more realistic depiction of earth from space, the improved art, and yes, the more muted colors bring Star Trek just about all the way into the present, and it impresses the hell out of me that it takes so little to accomplish that. It's a very neat trick.

But this is just a first impression from watching this collection of clips, I've still done relatively little audience watching. Your reasons for prefferring the original seem perfectly solid and respectable to me.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-07-01

I've still done relatively little audience watching.

was supposed to be "episode-watching"

infinite zest - 2014-07-01

From the Youtube comments anyway, it looks like the DVDs will have both, something that could've saved Lucasfilms a lot of hatemail if they'd done the same in the first place.

Makes me long for my wall of Star Wars VHS that I found on a curb. I didn't have room for them so I curbed them again for someone else to enjoy. At least if I decide to watch them all again some day, it won't have to be remastered (truth be told, this actually looks tastefully done, unlike certain other movies with "Star" in the title.)

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-07-01

You know, I'm not making this up. For years, it bugged me just a little that at the end of Return of the Jedi, Darth Vader just pitches the emperor off that ledge wthout saying anything. It always just cried out for a little added exposition, some dialogue or something.

Harveyjames - 2014-07-01

What in the tits

So they've replaced low-grade miniature work that gelled with the look of the show with low-grade CG work that doesn't. Great work!!

bongoprophet - 2014-07-01

I also am confused.

Kabbage - 2014-07-01

I really like the CG in this, honestly.

Raggamuffin - 2014-07-01

I think they did a pretty good job. Didn't try to over do it.

gravelstudios - 2014-07-02

I love the background that was added behind the picture of Spock's betrothed. It seemed gratuitous.
