Nice gams.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-07-05

He's a tough egg, all right!

Bort - 2014-07-06

That may be the line in all of "Archer" that makes me laugh the most, just the way that Archer has completely nailed the newsreel voice.

memedumpster - 2014-07-05

Knowingly inviting my own destruction saying this, but I really liked this movie.

All except for the very end when they dollied in Samuel L. Jackson to Teddy Ruxpin out himself a check, ruining the superior tone set by Tommy Lee Jones as an authority figure who can act.

The first half of the movie was really fun, but the plot sort of ends after the big rescue scene half-way through. There was nothing going on between Cap and Red Skull, so their inevitable fight at the end was meaningless.

Bort - 2014-07-05

It was kind of an inevitable weakness of the film, I think. Cap couldn't win WWII, so they had to distance Cap and the Howling Commandos from the US Army, and likewise distance the Red Skull and Hydra from the Nazis. That way they could have all the superhero POWs! and ZAPs! they wanted, without changing the course of the war. Unfortunately, this also resulted in fights that felt mostly irrelevant, because there's no basis for assigning any importance to them.

I like the film just fine for the first half. But then again, I actually like superhero origin stories (that's the Hero's Journey part of the hero's tale), so I don't mind seeing how Steve Rogers became a superhero. Which, coincidentally, takes us through the rescue of the 107th. After that, well-made action movie that doesn't do much for me.

It's the people who don't like this movie who are inviting their own destruction, because they are terrornazis. Got em.

EvilHomer - 2014-07-05

So, Bort. Did you like the Orbot's origin stories?

Bort - 2014-07-05

Didn't watch it. But note that, since they were robots (and not even robots but Broots), they don't have souls, and therefore can't go on a Hero's Journey. At most they can beep-boop their way through problems that they solve through heuristic algorithms.

It's kind of amazing how many WWII movies are still being made. You almost never see war movies about the Spanish American war. Or Vietnam.

Bort - 2014-07-05

Well WWII has an awesome plot: evil was taking over the world, and Americans heard the call to stand up to evil, and through sheer grit and determination they stopped evil in its tracks. Who wouldn't pay to see that?

(Yes, I realize there may be a historical inaccuracy or two in that plot. Stop nitpicking!)

Xenocide - 2014-07-05

Evil was clumsily rolling over the easily rolled over parts of Europe. Then later, Evil was like, "Well, we beat the Dutch, so we're clearly unstoppable. Time to become the first army in human history to successfully invade Russia!" Evil then pooped its pants and fell down.

America was much more instrumental in defeating the forces of Animeland, but for some reason all WWII movies are about us shooting Germans instead. Meanwhile, somewhere just offscreen, one Soviet guy takes out nine Nazis for every one Tom Hanks kills.

themilkshark - 2014-07-06

Best movie.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-07-10

It's a lot of fun, this movie. I think superhero movies should all be set in the respective era in which they were created, meaning a 1930s Superman and all that. It would be SO MUCH BETTER that way.
