"they need to find something to give them meaning"

Cena_mark - 2014-07-10

I enjoy the show, but it would sad to depend on an oddball subculture to give meaning to your life. If anything that statement accurately describes people who are not bronies.

EvilHomer - 2014-07-10

No offense to that guy, I'm sure he's a nice fellow and I'm sure he means well, but that was such a cop-out. You can say that about any group! Maybe it's true? Maybe it's not? The important thing is, it sounds good, nobody can contradict you on it, and you'll still get paid for providing your "expert" opinion on the subject. "Why do people follow World Cup teams?" *Because people are social animals, and they want their lives to have meaning!*

I liked Dustykatt's statement at 1:14. Simple, accurate, and no bullshit.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2014-07-10

Fuck YOU, history of Western civilization!

EvilHomer - 2014-07-10

This is the FUTURE of Western Civilization!

EvilHomer - 2014-07-10

Also the present.

Xenocide - 2014-07-10

No, fuck YOU, AP Chemistry!

And fuck you, Intro to Literary Criticism!

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2014-07-10

I know this is the future of Western civilization, that's why China is winning.

EvilHomer - 2014-07-10

China's winning because they hit on the perfect combination of socialist totalitarianism and Victorian capitalism. Also because China has the largest workforce parked on top of some of the most mineral rich lands on Earth, and has been the world's most dominant power for much of human history.

BUT FEAR NOT. Ponies have invaded both Japan and Korea. Their lands are now awash in friendly skittle-colored horsies. China will fall, too. Soon. Very soon.

China is playing catchup on the 20th century, but when the clock strikes midnight and they finally step into the 21st, they will discover what we already know: that, Oh My Celestia! - It's full of ponies!

Cena_mark - 2014-07-10

True, but the countries that created stuff like Hello Kitty and Pucca don't seem like the types of societies that would resist our beloved ponies. China may be a tougher nut to crack.

The fiery sword of Allah can't cleanse this nation soon enough.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2014-07-10

When Allah rides Twilight Sparkle into the heathen lands of Zhou, he shall finally be victorious.

infinite zest - 2014-07-10

If you live in or around Portland, Oregon, the film is screening on July 17th at the art museum with the director in attendance.

infinite zest - 2014-07-10

and in Tacoma Washington on the 22nd. And I think that's it for now.

EvilHomer - 2014-07-10

Will you be going? It looks like a really fun documentary, and I'm glad they got not just Ashleigh Ball, but also brand-name bronies like Dustykatt.

The Mothership - 2014-07-10

I would go just for the freakshow, but since its Portland I'm sure its already sold out.

infinite zest - 2014-07-10

Yeah I'm definitely going to go. I've mentioned it before but I don't really know anything about MLP. I just find the phenomenon beyond fascinating and not in a voyeuristic way.

EvilHomer - 2014-07-10

That's how I got into it. I didn't watch the show at all, I just thought the whole community thing was fascinating, and not in a mean way... at least, not in a mean way for very long. Things like the McDonald's Brony and the Derpy drama, the Andrew WK music video and the fan-created episodes that looked like real TV shows, after awhile it just broke down my natural skepticism.

And now the McDonald's Brony Guy wants me to help him on a webseries he's making!

Xenocide - 2014-07-10

About a year ago some idiot friend of a friend from Facebook made a big deal about how he was going to see Equestria Girls "to laugh at all the freaks."

Then he came back all disappointed because most of the people at his screening were actual little girls with their parents, and the few unaccompanied adults weren't in costume and never started masturbating. AS FAR AS HE KNOWS.

infinite zest - 2014-07-10

Yeah it might be sold out; maybe I'll try to get in as press and interview the guy. I'll just say I'm from poe-news or use my old sega-otaku business cards :)

jreid - 2014-07-10

I really thought the whole brony thing was 'old fedora' and we wouldn't have to hear about it anymore. Couple more years I guess.

EvilHomer - 2014-07-10

If you can find a show that's better than My Little Pony, we're all ears.

Cena_mark - 2014-07-10

Home is right. The show's quality speaks for itself. I initially watched the show out of curiosity and got hooked.

Cena_mark - 2014-07-10

Part of it may be that I'm a cartoon fan. The TV shows most people talk about don't appeal to me. I don't care about Game of Thrones or Law and Order. I'm more excited about Legend of Korra and Gravity Falls. Then there's wrestling and football of course.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2014-07-10

Honestly? I'm looking forward to watching this. Something about obsessive tv show fandoms is fascinating once it reaches the point of it's own, dedicated conventions that thousands of people trying to make a lifestyle out of it show up to.

Trekkies is the only other tv show fanbase I can think of that went that far.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2014-07-10

The Xena people were pretty intense back in the day. Their fandom has dwindled to just butch dyke mating conventions at this point.

Also the Firefly people will never let go. I had to. Because it's gone.

Cena_mark - 2014-07-10

Firefly fans suck so much. It would be like me pining over the short lived wrestling gimmick of Pirate Paul Burchill. They need to move on and realize that they're giving a lot of hoopla for a show that lasted one season.

Cena_mark - 2014-07-10

And despite lasting 30 or so seasons Dr. Who sucks and Dr. Who fans are the worst fandom ever.

Old_Zircon - 2014-07-11

But anything with Tom Baker is entertaining by merit of Tom Baker being in it.

Boomer The Dog - 2014-07-10

I hear about MLP a lot because of a crossover with Furry. Some Furries are Pony fans too.

Furry fandom goes back to cartoons and comics too, and at least in early times it was stuff you heard or read as kids that made you like anthro animals. Now with Furry fandom established, you can join and don't have to be an existing fan of anthro stuff.

I've watched one episode of MLP, and play Pony songs on my station at times, grass is what's for dinner.

Boomer

EvilHomer - 2014-07-11

Are there many pony furries these days? I know furries traditionally make fursonas like wolves and foxes and tigers; are furries starting to embrace pony fursonas, too? Or do furry bronies keep their fursonas and their ponysonas separate?

Also, which pony songs do you play? Songs from the show, or just songs made by the brony community?

Boomer The Dog - 2014-07-11

Hi Homer, I think it's crossover in all ways, Furries adding an interest in MLP because it's related and cool, something new adding to the spice of life. Some Furs like the cute nature to it, or the animation.

There was a little tension and jokes about Bronies a few years ago, we even had fun with Bronies on Doggy Radio, but I haven't heard of that lately, there was suddenly another competing fandom I guess, and it spooked some fuzzies out. A few Furs jumped to Brony and their friends felt left out too. Still, a look at flayrah.com, a Fur news site shows several articles where MLP is mentioned.

I've seen Bronies at Fur conventions, with a few costumes, and one guy I was woofing with last weekend had a shirt that said BRONY across the front of it.

Traditionally it seems that Furs have been mostly predators, and there always seemed to be fewer domestic Dogs in the scene. Among fursuiters though, the Dog always seemed to be well represented, so I think as costuming has gotten to be a big part of Furry, the Dog has been elevated, and there are more Dogs, like Huskies.

Horses, Equines have always seemed to be less represented, and they've become more visible over time, and the rise of Bronyism has had to help.

I have AM 690 doing automation most of the time, and I have a few fan songs, and some commercial ones. Acousticbrony Vs Mandopony - Epic Rap Battles Of MLP, Derpy Hooves, Eurobeat Brony, Psychedelic Brony, and Friendship Is Magic - Brony Appreciation Medley. That's what's in my list. If you have some others I should play, or something you do, send it over.

The station reaches my neighborhood mostly and it's weak outside of the area, but we could even hear it on the river road by Anthrocon last weekend, and I thought it was cool that my signal was actually reaching a Furry area. Not that anyone would tune in an AM signal to hear it, but it was there.
