I always thought network TV had two safety nets for this: the first was a slight delay of a few seconds (especially on the Today Show where there could easily be a New York Streaker streaking thru the outdoor audience) and the second was a speech recognition system that would recognize certain words and bleep them out as they were being said. Maybe I'm just making this up.

Sadly that's now a "was". The news of her death hit the internet yesterday.

Like many people, I became aware of Elaine Stritch only recently, when she played the recurring role of Alec Baldwin's mom on 30 Rock. She was wonderful. You could absolutely love her and still be glad she's not YOUR mom! Then I read an ecstatic tweet from someone who had just seen her do a cabaret show, and found out she was a musical theater legend.

I had no idea. She was about my grandma-in-law's age, who also had a pretty spicy mouth (except when she pronounced jalapeno "jal-app-ano" and for some unknown reason called Sloppy Joes "Hot Tamales.")

Rest in Peace Ms. Stritch, I promise to watch some 30 Rock in your honor.
