ok what is this things purpose?
|
EvilHomer - 2014-07-23 Storming beaches and killing the fuck out of people. According to the hype, the "real" thing will be over twice as large and capable of transporting three entire tanks over all sorts of conditions from up to two hundred miles away, which is fairly impressive. Another purpose is to spend money and turn a profit for state and private military enterprises.
Of course, seeing as this is a Marines vehicle, it probably won't work for shit and will wind up accomplishing only the second goal.

badideasinaction - 2014-07-23 Serious question: would storming a defended beach ever be in the cards for the US military now? I kinda thought that had gone the way of trench warfare given that you tend to lose more troops in a day than they now do in an entire war, and because any defended beach would be up defended after the tommohawk missiles were finished.

SolRo - 2014-07-23 Yeah, but you gotta have this, just incase.
|
EvilHomer - 2014-07-23 In all honesty, this would probably just wind up being used as a boring old logistical vehicle - quietly ferrying men and tanks onto uncontested beachheads, because missiles and Rangers have already cleared the way. But it's big! And it's got neat flipper-treads! And the fucking Russians don't have them!

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-07-23 Eminently more practical than the giant robot that punches your enemies to death which was originally pitched by Boeing.

The decision to cast Megaweapon for the role of Moondoggie in the Gidget reboot must have looked weird on paper, but damned if it wasn't brilliant.

There's an option in that contract for a steam-powered version made of teak and brass.

I wanted to know about why the Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAV) might need to be replaced in the first place. I ended up on a video of the amphibious LCAV making a beach landing to deploy another, smaller, but also amphibious vehicle and realised that there is just no arguing with these people.
