I like how the message here is simultaneously "Don't be shallow and marry for money" and "Ugly people are only worthy suitors if they have money."

Also, with context, "It is perfectly normal and expected to settle for an interspecies marriage if you suspect that your fairy boyfriend has frozen to death because even thumb-sized women cannot survive without a man."

God damn this was a weird movie.

It's strange seeing such an accurate human design next to a very cartoony mouse(which is why they're so far apart most of the time I'm sure). And Thumbelina dancing on her own around 1:03 makes me think that she's completely missing the content of the song and is just happily swaying to the soothing tones of Carol Channing.

Plus side: this is absolutely top notch character animation. This is a stupid song and a stupid set of characters, but MY GOD look how fluidly they move.

It really is. I haven't watches this movie in probably fifteen years and holy wow I don't remember the animation being this good. It looks beautiful on blu ray too, the colors are far more vibrant than I remember.

Then again I probably forgot all that because this movie bored the hell out of me. The vast majority of Don Bluth's films were like that for me; very nice Disney-rivaling animation without the good stories, characters or songs to warrant it.

Oh well, Thumbelina is still better than A Troll in Central Park, at least.

80's Don Bluth is amazing, and I won't allow dissent. 90's Don Bluth...It's like he had a stroke or something. I wonder if the death of Judith Barsi messed with his head, like he couldn't bring himself to scare children any more, when the scary parts were the best parts.

True enough. The Secret of NIMH, An American Tail, The Land Before Time, and All Dogs Go To Heaven were beautifully animated films with solid stories and music, that even rivaled some of the Disney Renaissance films of the 90s.

But after that point? Ugh. Anastasia is the only Bluth film after All Dogs Go To Heaven that I'd willingly sit through again. It was a nice historically revised eye candy counterpart to Disney's Pocahontas. I liked it. But Rock-A-Doodle? The Pebble and the Penguin? Jesus, even as a kid those movies did nothing for me.

I liked Titan AE personally, but yeah I think Bluth's time had kinda passed by that point, sad as it was.
