Absolutely disgusting from start to finish. I sort of skipped through it, and everything I paused on was either sad, frightening, or both. Whoop whoop!

infinite zest - 2014-08-21

I think I got lucky and skipped right to 26:00. I'll probably watch the whole thing later.

Old People - 2014-08-21

Oh, I'd say that part qualifies as sad and frightening.

Could not stop myself from clicking play.
Could not stop myself from watching the entire thing.
Five stars.

It's like some terrifying glimpse into a world where Jerry Garcia was born a poor black man in the 'hood.

So I spent the better part of last night talking to one of my juggalo friends about the juggalo mystery religion. She's really into it. She brought up some really interesting ideas, and she's not just another juggaho burnout (she has pretty solid academic credentials, including a Masters Degree in Theology and Divinity Studies) so I believe she's a reliable source. This is doubly interesting for me, because as I've been arguing for a while now, the juggalos are not a gang, but a cult (and possibly entitled to certain constitutional privileges).

Can any juggaPoEs here help me verify some stuff?

For example, apparently there's a ton of Egyptian themes underlying the Dark Carnival / Children of the Lotus mythos; a section in Dark Lotus' "Black Crows" was adapted from the Book of the Dead (there are many, many variations of the BotD, and I have not been able to locate which version it was taken from), and the Hatcheman was based on an Egyptian priestly hieroglyph (I always assumed it had something to do with the Hopi flute man; I've skimmed Gardiner's index, but have not found the hieroglyph yet). She was also explaining how the color of one's clown paint had deep esoteric meanings for observant members of the Lotus Family - that initiates were divided into a dualistic system represented by either black or white face paint - and she told a delightful story about how certain juggalos developed a deeply spiritual ritual out of chucking baloney at naked chicks. The most interesting thing (for me at least) was her theory that true Juggalism is essentially pagan and gnostic, rather than simply Christian, as most people (myself included) tend to assume. Specifically, the ultimate goal of the Joker Cards lies in transcendence and personal god-hood, rather than obedience to a permanently separate divinity. If true, this would put a whole new spin on Violent J and his most devout juggalo disciples!

Private rites of magic send
The temple prostitutes to sleep
All the literati keep
An imaginary friend

You are giving these retarded hooligans way too much credit.

EvilHomer - 2014-08-21

I'm not saying their religion is particularly well thought-out, just that the juggalo mythos may be a lot more complex than we outsiders typically assume. They really grabbed the ball and started running with it.

Honestly, I wouldn't be too shocked if the Dark Carnival became the next Mormonism. In fact, I'm willing to offer even odds on Juggalos taking over what's left of Detroit and turning it into their own version of Salt Lake City, within our own lifetimes!

Old People - 2014-08-21

You know, I'm actually considering being police in Detroit once the private security fad has run its course; they are desperate for people and it'd look great on my CV. So I hope you're right about that fair city, because I would love to oppress some of these chuckleheads.

When Karl Marx said religion was the opiate of the masses, he didn't mean for your friend to take it so literally, EH.

memedumpster - 2014-08-21

I did notice the song about rain growing crops did seem like a bit out of the Golden Bough. I think this puts the cart before the horse though, as humans express these things through all lenses, not just juggalocity.

These people looked harmless to me. Compared to ISIS, white supremacists, and the other global tribal shitheels, they're not even controversial.

infinite zest - 2014-08-21

Kinda meant as a reply to EH but I don't want to mess up the thread: I was on a date with this girl and we got to talking about music and I asked about her tattoo.. I thought it was the Hatchet guy but it was actually Social Distortion. I don't know a thing about either band but she was from Indiana so I just figured. Not that I'd care either way. She said that she thought they were misogynistic and I quickly changed the subject.

Thing is, the misogyny in Juggalos doesn't appear to be any worse than stories I've heard from Burners or even people who attended Pitchfork or other music fests. Assholes will be assholes regardless of the music they listen to.

Dude puts a firecracker in a dead bird stuck on his friends' car's grill.

So fucking fresh.

Also the middle-finger cloud.
