non-compliance is punishable by death

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-08-21

I find it really telling/disturbing how many people who'll shout "liberty!" and "don't tread on me!" are agreeing with the retired cop who basically said "do whatever a cop tells you to do, no matter what, and you won't get hurt or killed."

It's nice to see doublethink so large it can be used as a demonstration aid for children, but dayum...

animegurl1000 - 2014-08-21

Ironically, the people who complain the loudest about government tyranny are the ones who are the least likely to ever be on the business end of a cop/soldier's gun.

Nominal - 2014-08-21

Ironically, the people who complain the loudest about government tyranny are the ones who are upset that they can't legally shoot "traitors".

exy - 2014-08-21

You can't threaten to kill white people, dumb cop!

memedumpster - 2014-08-21

That's all he can do white to white people. A black person would have got six to the face with narry a word.

Bort - 2014-08-21

Can I go wider on this for just a second? There are any number of conservatives who deny there's significant racism in the Right; of course they deny it, it's self-serving to do so. But there are too many liberals who grossly underestimate how much racism motivates the Right. Remember Thomas Frank, the guy who wrote "What's the Matter with Kansas?" ... the guy flat-out rejected racism as a motivating factor among the Republicans. He even said in an interview: "And there’s no question that racism is waning; they do studies of people’s attitudes and it is a dying force, there’s no question about that, but conservatism is not."

To be fair to Thomas Frank, I think he said that before the Obama presidency. But to be even more fair to Thomas Frank, you had to be some sort of god damn idiot to not realize what the Republicans have been doing for decades; it's not like we haven't known about the Southern Strategy and Lee Atwater's explanation of how to use code language.

There is no fixing racists, not in any reliable way anyway; all we can do is wait for them to die off, and be replaced by people with far less of a racist bent. In the meantime, every Election Day the racists are going to roll out of bed and vote for the most racist shitbags they can possibly elect, and they need to be countered in overwhelming numbers on Election Day. That's how we win this.

The Mothership - 2014-08-21

What Bort said.

Scrimmjob - 2014-08-21

I hope bort is right about racists dying out. I know plenty of full blown bigots around my age, and even some younger.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-08-21

>>There is no fixing racists, not in any reliable way anyway; all we can do is wait for them to die off, and be replaced by people with far less of a racist bent.

I don't know about "fixing" them, If you stop letting them kill people with impunity, they will stop killing people. To a very great extent this has happened. I once hear a report on NPR about a man who collects "lynching postcards" This blew my mind. At one time, a white person could send a photograph of himself participating in the murder of a black man through the mails without even bothering to put it in an envelope. THAT is fucking impunity.

Old_Zircon - 2014-08-22

I'm pretty skeptical of this "it" being an actual thing that "we" can "win," too. What is "it," who are "we" and what is this end-point at which "we" have"won?"

Bort - 2014-08-22

"I hope bort is right about racists dying out. I know plenty of full blown bigots around my age, and even some younger."

Without a doubt, there will always be racists, but young folks overall have less and less use for racism. Some places are progressing faster than others, I grant you.

"I'm pretty skeptical of this 'it' being an actual thing that 'we' can 'win,' too. What is 'it,' who are 'we' and what is this end-point at which 'we' have 'won?'"

Talking in broad strokes here, about the policy our government follows and how much of that policy hinges upon successful appeals to racism. The quick answer is, vote in every election for whatever candidate you think can beat the Republican. And it's probably going to take an ongoing effort; beating Republicans in a single election won't be sufficient.

memedumpster - 2014-08-22

You ignore racist democrats, like all the ones in my family. They are the norm in the South.

memedumpster - 2014-08-22

Amongst white people that is. Last election showed me in clear numbers that well over half of white people are racist garbage by straight political ticket. When I factor in my own experience with Southern Democrats, it also looks like half of them are racist as fuck. If you just assume every white person is racist, you'll be correct more often than not.

Fuck white people.

asian hick - 2014-08-22

Why do you think racism is waning and that there is "less use for it" among white people?

White people have a hegemonic control of our country. Many realize the end of that dominance is in sight. Why wouldn't a group that has dominated our country since it's inception do everything it can to hold onto power?

There's plenty of research that shows racism is most vociferous not where a small, powerless minority group exists but instead in locations where the minority is numerous enough to challenge that dominant group. The number of those places will grow.

I'd like to be proven wrong but I don't think I will be.

Bort - 2014-08-22

"Why do you think racism is waning and that there is 'less use for it' among white people?"

Polls -- just about all of them show that Millennials are far less motivated by, or accepting of, racism than older demographics.

"White people have a hegemonic control of our country."

That doesn't seem to be something younger whites are particularly aware of, at least in many parts of the country; in fact it's a little bit of a problem among Millennials that they tend to not understand the importance of (for example) the Voting Rights Act or affirmative action, because they are so far removed from the brazenly discriminatory systems that necessitated them. Discrimination is still out there, but you need to learn how to hear the dogwhistles.

But I think there's something amiss with your premise. If someone says "our society discriminates strongly against some people while favoring others, and it so happens you are in the favored category", your assumption is that people should be expected to say "oh really? That's awesome!" rather than "wait, why can't we make the system more fair?" If you're not starting with the perception that those other people deserve to be discriminated against, discrimination is going to be a hard sell.

Old_Zircon - 2014-08-22

For the record I do mostly agree with you, Bort. Mostly.

Old_Zircon - 2014-08-21

I have this mounting suspicion that this isn't going to end.

Not well, anyway.

Nikon - 2014-08-21

Same here.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2014-08-21

I will say this, if there are good cops in Ferguson and/or who were called into the area because the Ferguson police were told to sit this out, it cannot be easy to be them right now. They are probably dealing with more pressure than I can imagine.

This guy needs to cool his jets and seriously re-evaluate his behavior, maybe take an extended vacation. For like a few years.

Old_Zircon - 2014-08-22

Part of it might be that I was in Canada for the first week of it, and seeing it being covered by non US media looked a lot like the US media's overage of the riots in Greece.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-08-21

Gofuckyourself is a pretty common name in some parts of the country.
