Rodents of Unusual Size - 2014-08-26

I hope this story is fake but then I remember codehappy's immortal story of the lesbian who worshiped Gadget that fell in love with her and declared Gadget to be the most amazing character ever created, and she could only get rid of her by trashing the whole show, thereby crushing her.

EvilHomer - 2014-08-26

I can't find any info to corroborate this. The original news story is unsourced, and most of the pictures look photoshopped. The consensus seems to be that, assuming the story isn't completely fake, the Hackwrench cult is either a bunch of Russian hipsters being ironic, or a group of hardcore Gadget fans whose devotion to the Mousey One has been misinterpreted due to language barriers.

However, knowing the Gadget fandom, a genuine cult is totally within the realm of believability.

EvilHomer - 2014-08-26

The cult is mentioned on her Russian Wikipedia page. Her Russian name is "Gayka", she is very popular over there, and apparently a poll in Pravda named her the world's second sexiest cartoon character.

The angelic-looking fliers say something along the lines of "Happy Smiley! March 15th!" No clue what that means. A reference to the Ides of March, or maybe just a promo for a social event?

Gadget is a rodent of normal size.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2014-08-26

Maybe this is like pastafarianism but also taking the piss out of anime fans?
Though imo compared to most of the popular choices, choosing this character as a deity makes sense. Since she is a disney cartoon character for kids she is probably not going to act in some nefarious way.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-08-26

I've seen this group before, and I fear POE's law comes into effect. If it started out as a joke, it seems to have become a pretty serious one.

Simillion - 2014-08-26

is there a russian word for "otaku?"

ashtar. - 2014-08-26

RESCUE RANGERS IS NOT ANIME

You are all hereby kicked out of anime club. God, I bet you're not even pronouncing "anime" right. Dorks.

Meerkat - 2014-08-27

WHO DOESN'T?!

Meerkat - 2014-08-27

Meradona?

dairyqueenlatifah - 2014-08-27

I'm honestly not sure if it's real or not. I mean, it's only six guys, and they all look just the right age that Rescue Rangers was on when they were the appropriate age.

From the looks of it, it seems like either a group of rampant fanboys being shamelessly public with their fandom, or being ironic for attention.

The thing is, after the shit I saw day after day on PoEred regarding grown people who are fans of Disney Afternoon shows that went off the air 20 years ago, I can't simply disregard the idea of a religion forming around Gadget from Rescue Rangers, or Molly from Talespin, or Goslin from Darkwing Duck, or Demona from Gargoyles. It's very possible.

But hell, wasn't there a Rescue Rangers episode about a cult? That makes this all the more easy to believe.

Spaceman Africa - 2014-08-27

I want to believe.
