woah!! awesome!! :D

infinite zest - 2014-09-04

I told myself I was going to wait and listen to this on headphones when I got home, but I couldn't wait. It sounds like a return to SAW's more peaceful soundscapes. SAW was always my favorite. I always like it when something sounds so new that I really can't find the words to describe it save for "sounds good!"

Bootymarch - 2014-09-04

Reminds me more of the transition period in between that and the rdj album, specifically hangable auto bulb. The drum programming isn't as batshit experimental as I would like but otherwise it sounded nice.

But it's still no autechre.

Bootymarch - 2014-09-04

Oh and can't disrespect the 303

yogarfield - 2014-09-04

FAWK YEAH

chairsforcheap - 2014-09-04

so excited about this. In a lot of the press i feel like people have been calling drukqs his most recent album... was 26 mixes for cash not considered an album?

infinite zest - 2014-09-04

It's an album but I think what they mean to say is album of original material. But you're right: by that logic, Nirvana's Incesticide isn't an album either.

StanleyPain - 2014-09-04

Technically, he's released stuff since drukqs. There was the Analord series (which was compiled into Chosen Lords) and then there was The Tuss in 2007. As far as I know RDJ still denies he was behind The Tuss, but it is so obviously him.

blue vein steel - 2014-09-04

Drukqs may not even technically be an album, as it's been said it was a few different things from a period of like 5 years released to fulfill a contract. But, "album" has a pretty fluid definition.

This is good

infinite zest - 2014-09-04

Oh yeah! Totally forgot about Analord.

chairsforcheap - 2014-09-04

oh my god the tuss album is so amazing... this is more stamped aphex... i want to hear another fingerbib though. COME ON RICHARD!

Holy shit already

Miss Henson's 6th grade class - 2014-09-04

Well, at least he's not making tracks seemingly designed to drive people away anymore.

infinite zest - 2014-09-04

When Drukqs came out I hated it. But I was pretty poor. I spent that summer working a minimum wage job and giving plasma and this was sort of before the ubiquity of download services like Soulseek, with music I actually wanted to listen to: if I wanted the new Creed or Dr. Dre album, I could find it on Napster, but I didn't want that.

So I stuck with it, listening to it on headphones every night when I went to sleep, in a way forcing myself to figure out what it was, and why it was so different from anything else I had ever heard. The payoff was some crazy dreams. I was like 19 at the time and haven't revisited it since, but if nothing else, it left an impact.

Miss Henson's 6th grade class - 2014-09-04

Well, I haven't heard that album. I was thinking of his "Analord" album, which had a lot of delicious squiggly electronics on it but no actual tunes.

Void 71 - 2014-09-04

This sounds better than anything he's released since Windowlicker. It sounds really self-aware, like he's trying to meld together the high points of his career. It sounds like he mixed the not-over-the-top beat chopping from RDJ Album with the weird processed vocals from Come to Daddy and Windowlicker and threw some Polygon Window/SAW-style synth textures on top.

For the first time in 15 years, I'm excited about an Aphex Twin release.

infinite zest - 2014-09-04

Oh yeah. Analord.. I dunno. A coworker put it on and I was pretty indifferent.

Merzbau - 2014-09-04

Analord took a long, looong time to sink in for me (nowhere near the immediate "oh hey he's back" impact of the Tuss releases) but there are absolutely some tunes there. Try "Crying in Your Face," "PWSteal.Ldpinch.D" and "Cilonen" to start with.

I'm pretty psyched about Syro, and my initial impression of this track is more or less the same as Void 71's. He's hitting a lot of recognizable sounds and styles from across his career in this one track; it'll be interesting to see if that's true of the album as a whole.

StanleyPain - 2014-09-04

He's been giving interviews and has said that Syro is way more approachable than anything he's released in ages, so I'm assuming the whole album is probably going to be a little more restrained than usual.

StanleyPain - 2014-09-04

On a related topic, Chosen Lords was pretty lame, all told. Do yourself a favor and seek out the actual vinyls or get the MP3s (I think you can still get them on the Bleep store) of the original Analord releases because god knows what RDJ was thinking distilling all of that into a handful of tracks on a CD that was missing the entire first two vinyls (which together is something like 8 tracks most AFX fans have never even heard)

Merzbau - 2014-09-05

I keep meaning to buy "official" mp3s to replace the shitty vinyl rips off Soulseek I've had for ages but the last time I checked, Rephlex's webpage was still down and redirecting to their Discogs listing. Which sucks because they don't sell digital releases through anyone else :(

StanleyPain - 2014-09-05

This:
http://tinyurl.com/q42bvjd

Is a YouTube playlist of all 42 tracks, which I think might be the only place for the entire Analord series now Rephlex doesn't sell them and Bleep apparently doesn't now.

Ripping the tracks from YT might not be the absolute best quality, but given the availability issues it's probably the best alternative right now.

Scrimmjob - 2014-09-05

Some of those Analord ep's are really good, others can be pretty meh depending on your taste. I thought there was a box set of all of the ep's but now I can't find it anywhere. I seem to remember it being comically expensive, but maybe I'm mistaken.

fedex - 2014-09-05

Polygon Window FTW

fluffy - 2014-09-05

Okay, buying the hell out of this when it drops.

Is it true that there's no high-quality MP3 purchase option though? Bleah. (Yes I know "high-quality MP3" is an oxymoron, get off your goddamn high horse you audiophile wanker.) I'd be most tempted to buy the vinyl version if it comes with a digital download. CDs are just installation media for ripped audio, and I don't even have an easy way of ripping anymore since I don't even have any computers with optical drives at this point.

Merzbau - 2014-09-06

Not at all true. Horrific transatlantic shipping costs aside, Bleep is pretty great- you can preorder the album in 320kbps mp3, WAV, FLAC or 24-bit WAV which I did not even know was a thing. And every LP that comes out on Warp now includes a download voucher for the mp3 version.

fluffy - 2014-09-06

Good to know, thanks! So if I preorder the vinyl version on Amazon I'll also get a download voucher?

Merzbau - 2014-09-08

Yeah, they put a little paper slip with the code inside the sleeve. You can get it from anywhere and still get a download so long as it's a sealed copy.

fluffy - 2014-11-24

Oh for what it's worth, not only does Amazon include the MP3 download slip in the physical package, they just give you the 'autorip' content anyway. So I had the MP3s long before the vinyl physically arrived.
