So painful to watch people who suck at skyrim play it.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2014-09-10

Eh? How can someone suck at an elder scrolls game? They're unable to roleplay a character adventuring in a big open fantasy world?

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2014-09-10

Also may as well get out my opinion on elder scrolls:
In Oblivion they ruined the game by adding, detailed map, fast travel via map, and compass pointing to quest destinations. It became impossible to get lost and you no longer ahd to explore in order to fins stuff.. Imo they hobbled the best element of their games previously exloration and adventure.

(Also, yes you can remove that stuff but the rest of the game is not built to support that (for example you cant ask for directions like in morrowind))

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-09-10

That's a long list that overlooks the absolute worst problem with Oblivion: The fact that the gates and everything else scales with you.

And the conversation wheel.

infinite zest - 2014-09-10

I've never played the game but loved Daggerfall. I actually think it looks cooler this way.

infinite zest - 2014-09-10

quick side question: I'm sure I could figure it out but I'm thinking about picking up either this or the newest Saints Row, just for those times I don't feel like playing pinball. In Daggerfall you'd pull some shit like she does at the end and you'd be stuck in jail for a long time. Versus GTA where you just get out of the hospital or jail and 10 seconds has passed. It did help with my decision making but it was also kind of annoying, especially when I really didn't mean to do it honest I swear!

StanleyPain - 2014-09-10

If you're asking if you go to prison, yes. But unlike Daggerfall, you have a choice to either pay your bounty or just run for it. If you escape the guards, you can still hang out in that part of Skyrim if your bounty is low enough (just don't interact with any guards). On a high enough bounty, though, guards will just chase you automatically.

The choice between Skyrim and SR4 if pretty tough. Skyrim if you want a really good, large scale single player RPG sort of thing, SR4 if you're more in the mood for a pure-action sort of thing. SR4 really doesn't resemble GTA or even Saint's Row much anymore for that matter..it's more like Crackdown/Infamous something like that because of the addition of all the superpowers and alien technology. Personally I thought SR4 was one of the best games of last year, despite the now-fashionable Saint's Row hate.

EvilHomer - 2014-09-10

Who the hell gets caught and sent to prison? Intros aside, I think the only time I've ever been jailed since Morrowind was when I let myself get nicked by the Bruma guard so I could get in good with that thief in the cell.

SP, how close is SR4 to SR3? From the previews and demo, it looks like they reused a lot of stuff. I loved Saints Row 3, one of the best GTA style games ever, but I'm not sure if I'd enjoy playing it all over again, at least not for forty bucks.

infinite zest - 2014-09-10

Thanks! I think I'll probably do SR4, as I don't know how much longer I'll be living in a place with a 360, and it seems more like a jump in kind of game. If I had an xbox of my own I'd probably do skyrim.

StanleyPain - 2014-09-10

SR4 uses the same map as SR3 because the theme of the game is that you are inside a virtual reality rendition of Steelport. The gameplay, however, diverges from Saint's Row pretty early on as you start to get Matrix-style abilites. It's not really like the previous games at all, except in the tone and sense of humor obviously. There's a lot of Tron-style missions inside computers and things like that and the gameplay is less gunbattles in the streets type stuff and more shooting things with lasers and alien spacecraft and running around at 90 miles an hour while dropkicking cars into orbit. Personally I thought it was great. The speed and ferocity of the game makes the missions and activities (which got kind of boring in SR3) a bit more dynamic and fun and there's lots of side missions to upgrade your homies so they all have the same super powers you do so that you can use them in a fight where they basically kick all kinds of ass. The only real downside to the game is that unless you have played SR2 and 3 the storyline will be somewhat incomprehensible as it involves tons of callbacks and references and revisitations to previous games, but if you're a veteran of the series, you'll love it.

They're coming out with a stand-alone expansion now called Gat Out Of Hell which is basically SR4 craziness only now set in Hell with angels and demons and shit. Can't wait.

Scrimmjob - 2014-09-10

I would love to play Daggerfall again, unfortunately that is one broken ass goddamn game. It's no wonder I could never get very far when I had it as a teenager.

infinite zest - 2014-09-10

Yeah. I don't think I ever intended on beating it. I'm up in the air between 3 and 4 now though. 3's cheaper and it's rare that a game's humor makes me laugh at its intentional jokes (I sort of know the plot and the Mayor reveal.. well done is all I can say.) It's cheaper than 4 and the graphics look about the same so I might start there and see if I like it. Last game I got super into was Minecraft, mostly because I had a server and we'd get drunk and fuck with each other, like put someone on top of the world when they were asleep and forgot to log out, make cat fountains, things like that. I think a slightly more "real-life" one might be the best place for me to start.

EvilHomer - 2014-09-10

I'll probably check out SR4 when it gets cheaper. I keep meaning to get it, but between the painting, the piano, trying to finish Lost so I won't get spoilers from Leftovers fans, and every so often pretending to work, it keeps getting put on the back burner. IZ, I would really recommend SR3. The gameplay isn't quite as engaging as SR2, but the story and the humor are both awesome and ridiculous, and in many ways it's better than GTAIV.

Sanest Man Alive - 2014-09-11

I really liked SRIII the first time I played through it. Shooting dudes with flaming bullets and watching them run screaming! Rampaging through town in a tank! Killing emo Matrix bullet-timed thugettes with giant whack-a-mole hammers! HELL YEAH!

But there's things about it that still bug me. It had a much more rigid mission structure than Saints Row 2, because they wanted to force me through their goofy-yet-important narrative; it wasn't hand-holding so much as leash-pulling, especially when they don't even physically block you off from those "not yet!" areas in the beginning. Maybe I wanted to take down the grenade-spraying, roided-up luchadores before I bothered with the comparatively boring eurotrash mafia types! Ever think of that, Volition? HUH?

Also, it kinda cheapened side jobs and other bonus activities by reducing nearly all character upgrades to "just buy it on your phone menu". All you get for finishing jobs in SR3 is cash and more property. The game becomes less about poking around and finding silly shit to do and more about killing time and checking your murder-salary until you can buy more followers or whatever so you can finally go do silly shit.

tl;dr: fart.

Lurchi - 2014-09-10

I could never get into these games because WHO WALKS AROUND WITH THEIR HANDS OUT LIKE THAT

infinite zest - 2014-09-10

people at bar time mostly.

StanleyPain - 2014-09-10

Panhandlers?

boner - 2014-09-10

a frankenstein

oddeye - 2014-09-11

some games like this have the ability to lower your hands and others even require it to talk properly with NPCs and shit.

Old_Zircon - 2014-09-10

I unironically find it way more visually compelling this way.

fluffy - 2014-09-10

Same

GravidWithHate - 2014-09-10

I keep expecting Bob, Dot, and Enzo to show up.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2014-09-10

Yeah, it looks pretty alphanumeric this way.

hammsangwich - 2014-09-10

If Minecraft looked like this instead of blocky bullshit, I might be compelled to play it.
