This rings painfully true, especially as somebody who grew up in downtown Portland. But, it's only half the story, cause the other half of homeless kids in Portland are underage prostitutes.

I do like how they got the references spot on. I was a Cleveland kid but got transferred around because of arts cuts. Gabel and Central Catholic kids were always my rivals. The guy referenced at the end is one of the reasons why my neighborhood is out pricing its locals. Skits like these are great even if it means a handful of us get it.

That guy - 2014-09-12

I think some of that comes through.

True. Normally I like to go off on rants on here about Portlandia for various reasons. Brownstein's from Olympia WA and Armisten is from like NYC. Lots of times it seems like the show's just making fun of Portland for things that exist in most places (bad drivers, long lines for brunch, egocentric bicyclists, name droppers etc.) and how the show doesn't have the same charm as the short-lived Austin Stories. But this was a really funny way to end the sketch. I'm not comparing the shows but I always had that problem with KitH growing up. I've been to Canada less than half a dozen times, and while I sort of get what they're referencing sometimes, those little jokes went right over my head, and still do.

I don't think most viewers are confused enough to think that all that stuff is Portland-only.
"Y'know, Portland, that place with the long lines...?"

blue vein steel - 2014-09-12

no, people who look and act exactly like this are everywhere. Columbia, SC has it's own little enclave of krusts

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2014-09-11

Kumail Nanjiani deserves a bunch of movies. He cracks my shit up.

I think him as the waiter in another episode of Portlania is my favorite thing he's done.

Seattle has the "Ave Rats," San Francisco has the "Trustifarians."

Lately in Seattle I've noticed the panhandlers asking for very specific and esoteric amounts. For a few weeks everyone was asking specifically for 15 cents. Recently it's been 73. Interesting how that tactic spreads.

glasseye - 2014-09-12

Ugh... ave rats...

So annoying.

Dinkin Flicka - 2014-09-12

Are there still Ave Rats? Last time I was there, the place was a shopping mall compared to what it used to be

The Mothership - 2014-09-12

The Ave has been seriously sanitized since I lived on 43rd in the late 90s, and that is largely due to an incident where an ave rat killed a man with his skateboard back in 2002:

The whole city has gone through a lot of change over the last 10 years but there's still a lot of folks who fit the "ave rat" profile anyway. I'm not sure if the term is still in general use, but shared jargon tends to get lost when the entire population gets diluted by a sudden, massive influx of software engineers who are fresh out of college and don't care to learn anything about the city they've moved to.

I spend most of my time in Capitol Hill and there's still plenty of this sort of panhandler. I don't think there's a commonly accepted term for them in this part of town though.

Oh. I know a guy who knew that guy. His story's different regarding the altercation, but the person was also jailed about a year ago for identity theft and had a different last name the entire time we were friends so I don't really know what to believe.

5 for taking a piss out of krusts
