I do machines, but I understand.

Shit got real, and then it got unreal.

infinite zest - 2014-09-17

I'm glad to see this guy's stuff is getting funnier. His other stuff.. well it's OK but it's sort of your typical Newgrounds type stuff. This is truly a thing of beauty.

Old_Zircon - 2014-09-17

Yeah, I'm glad I came back and gave this a second chance, because I shut it off about 20 seconds in the first time.

oddeye - 2014-09-17

Enabler motherfuckers.

Kid Fenris - 2014-09-17

As a kid, I was disappointed when Raphael went from being a detached smart aleck in the cartoon to being an angry loner in other Ninja Turtles media. But I guess that was closer to the original comics.

Cube - 2014-09-17

Who cares about the original comics, everybody knows the REAL version is the one that you see first!

Unfortunately, for many, it will be the (NOT MICHAEL BAY) Michael Bay TMNT. Did anyone see it? My local paper, whose reviews I always trust:

http://www.portlandmercury.com/portland/heroes-in-the-half-bak ed/Content?oid=13228568

Basically, he doesn't say it's that much different from the old ones, which weren't cinematic masterpieces, but it also wasn't a piece of shit, unfairly judged because of Michael Bay's involvement, who didn't even direct the fucking thing. I mean, I'm not going to pay for it or anything, and usually put on TMNT VHS when I'm drunk and want to pass out to a movie so it'll be one of those movies, but I'm just curious. What'd anyone think who saw it?

infinite zest - 2014-09-17

But for some, and he kind of skims over this, the TMNT universe IS something very important: it's kind of like MLP but in reverse: the comics and early iterations sound incredibly badass (I haven't read them) and then it just.. I dunno. I don't think I'll ever get the taste of the TMNT Ooze "Fruit Pie" off my tongue.

I mean, I'll never forget the thrill of seeing it on the big screen for a (then) 8 year old me. But it's not exactly complaining about Robocop in hindsignt. I think we can all agree that the original Robocop was a cinematic masterpiece and a reboot was unnecessary (even though the director did Elite Squad, which I highly recommend: much like Verhoven's earlier work, he seemed an unlikely candidate when you could just find.. I dunno.. Michael Bay..) but TMNT seemed like it was ready for another reboot after the mid-90s cash grab (and best arcade game ever)

TMNT was my very first experience in having something incredibly cool become commercialized and fucking lame as shit. I was exposed to the Mirage Comics first and loved the fuck out of them. They aren't amazing literature or anything, but as a kid they were cool as shit. Just edgy and deep enough to get me sucked in.

Then the cartoon came out and it was, like, wtf is this shit?

...and yeah. in the comics Raphael is a moody fuck. He's the teenage male that internalizes everything and is angry at the world, but doesn't know how to deal with or express it in a healthy way. He doesn't get along with his family and only finds companionship in Casey Jones, a psychotic lunatic. They both roam the streets together looking for trouble. Leonardo is like the oldest sibling of a large one-parent family, who sees himself having to be the "man of the house". He thinks that his four brothers are his responsibility and it winds up crushing him. Michaelangelo was like the youngest sibling who goofed off and didn't take anything seriously. Donatello...was never super clear. I don't remember. He's the know-it-all in the later stuff, but I don't remember if that came through in the comics.

So, yeah. Pretty close to how they are depicted in newer stuff, but imagine it all being black and white, a bit moodier, and more death.

Stars for making me pop up and rant on POETV.

Excuse me, I have to shave my neck beard.

Yeah it seemed like a big sellout and "betrayal" to fans. I compared it to MLP because most fans of that show won't speak about the earlier incarnations. But it began as a toy, not a comic or cartoon. And whether or not you like the current one, you have to admit that it made the whole universe pretty badass for what's still considered by the mainstream as a kids' show. You get the bronies who complain about the contents of a coloring book, but the more I think about it, the more I think it was a joke. TMNT on the other hand went from what I understand as super badass to just plain "meh.. Vanilla Ice is in this one" which is sort of a rarity. Batman, for example, started off pretty campy. I mean, he fought a fucking PENCIL. West's were charming, of course, but then we saw the slow decline and frankly I was surprised that they didn't do the Batoozie at the end of Batman and Robin. The only reason why I stayed in the theatre was (and I love you dad) my dad kind of loved it.

On a side-note, the theatre by my house has Snowpiercer, Xmen Days of Future Past, Edge of Tomorrow TMNT AND Every Which Way But Loose. I might just go and see them all today. I kind of know them so they'll just let me stick around. I'll post my review if I do this, but I might do something else.

oddeye - 2014-09-17

jesus fuck, it's a fucking shitty franchise about goofy kung fu turtle-men, chill the fuck out.

sosage - 2014-09-17
