It seems to be getting less-than-favorable reviews, at least according to metacritic. I've seen so many commercials, and I think the style's kind of cool. But now it's looking like Watchdogs in Space, both in style and quality and hype. Oh well. I'll stick to Solitaire. On the bright side, Fez finally came out?!?

I watched a 2-hour "Let's Play" from here:

The last hour they played a much more entertaining game called "Counter Spy."

Destiny looks pretty, but it doesn't seem to have a whole hell of a lot that makes me think it's worth all the hoopla. It comes off as TF2 with ultra-pretty sci-fi graphics, an incomprehensible plot, and grinding.

Yeah. What's funny is if I want to see ultra pretty sci-fi graphics, I'll probably just watch Guardians of the Galaxy again. TF2 just seems like more fun (and I like its style and sense of humor.) It's kind of irrelevant to me anyway as I don't have a next gen system (the house has a 360 but nobody ever uses it for games.) I do like watching lets plays like these if only for the "swish swoon" of the graphics, like Ryse: things that, for me at least, I always sort of dreamed about in terms of "bits." "Someday we'll have 1000 bits and it'll look real life" says the kid me. But in both cases they don't seem like that much fun to actually play. That's kind of a weird shift. Minecraft is really boring to watch but extremely fun to play (until the thing is finished,) like videogames used to be.. hanging out at your friend's house with the one controller. These are fun and pretty to watch but seem pretty boring.

A bunch of my coworkers are into it but they're not sure why, and they keep on making fun of pretty much everything about it. But they keep playing. So I guess they enjoy it or are at least not ready to break out of the Skinner box.

It's Warframe, reskinned by the halo dudes.

You can try warframe for free on your computer without having to buy a console, and grind shooting AI enemies in the face till you get sick of it.

There, I saved you minimum.

The fucking PSO music gurl.

I've been playing this the last few weeks.
It's a really solid game and very tight, focused combination of FPS with RPG style aspects without going down quite the same route as Borderlands or something. The graphics and setting and attention to detail is mindblowing...it is easily one of best looking, most immersive games I have ever played. I'm having fun with it, personally.

That said, how Bungie uses the setting and tells a story is so uniformly fucking awful that I am amazed this game was released without at least SOME modifications to the near-universal negative reaction it got when the Beta was live. The game is this incomprehensible sci-fi nonsense by way of someone writing like they think they're Tolkien, but aren't even talented enough to be RA Salvatore. For reasons that remain a mystery, the best voice actors were assigned to characters who are basically just vendors (Peter Stormaire, Claudia Black, Nathan Fillion, Shoresh Aghdashloo, Erick Avari, and Bill Nighy are literally just vendors), and the actual characters that have to be routinely interacted with were given not only lifeless, shit dialog, but terrible voices (including a generic male/female voice for the protagonist that doesn't change even if you choose a different race). Peter Dinklage's work sounds like they used the first take he gave on every single line. Absolutely cringe-worthy.
Also, for a game that Bungie was calling "WoW with guns" it is woefully short on meaningful content. They keep referring to many of the game's features as "endgame" content, but an MMO that you intended to support for years to come should not be talking about "endgame" content when it hasn't been out for even 1 month.

In summary, the game is a lot of fun and you'll certainly get a few dozen hours of entertainment out of it just as you would with any other good game you'd buy on the market today, but as some kind of long-term virtual world you'd want to inhabit with your character for a long time, I'm not seeing it.

infinite zest - 2014-09-17

Bill Nighy!?! Cool! To be fair, some of his best work was in Hot Fuzz and The World's End, all collective 2 minutes of it. "Hey guys I've gotta go be in this movie that'll be up for some oscars in 30 minutes, let's make this quick."

StanleyPain - 2014-09-17

Oh, and also, one of the utterly hilarious things about how badly the "story" for Destiny is told is that you often do these missions where the Ghost is constantly like "NO ONE HAS BEEN HERE FOR A THOUSAND YEARS. THESE RUINS HAVE STOOD EMPTY BEYOND TIME" and there's people running around shooting shit. There's a great moment in a particular level where you're supposed to be opening a door that's been shut for 900 bazillion years or whatever and when it opened, there were other players inside already shooting the enemies that I guess were supposed to be a surprised. It's hilarious, but also one of the textbook examples of why the always-online nonsense of this game was so utterly dim.

Kid Fenris - 2014-09-18

Well, maybe the Ghost is an unreliable narrator!

Yeah, that's the ticket.

Marathon this ain't.
