He seems like a lot of fun!

Old People - 2014-09-27

What a fun-loving human trafficker!

hammsangwich - 2014-09-27

My understanding was that he trafficked people out of India so they could start convenience stores in the UK.

Old_Zircon - 2014-09-27

I haven't heard about this, links?

That's the most recent one, I think. This is news to me too.

Old People - 2014-09-27

Hamm, the issue was that he took a lot of money from those people, then never fulfilled his half of the bargain, then never returned the money. There was nothing benevolent about it; even if there had been, he was aiding illegal immigration and setting people up with black-market businesses.
Here's a brief example of one of the cases: http://www.traffickingproject.org/2007/10/indian-singer-convicted- on-trafficking.html
More recently, in the Times of India: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chandigarh/Daler-Mehndi-ap pears-in-court-in-human-trafficking-case/articleshow/26490005.cms< br /> etc, etc.
Everything I've read about the man in the last 10 years indicates that he is a smiling villain.

chairsforcheap - 2014-09-27

what's the word for when someone proves themselves absolutely correct while simultaneously proving themselves to be the worst company possible at a party

Old People - 2014-09-27

That was unnecessarily harsh. I just think that there are enough legitimately goodhearted entertainers in the world that we shouldn't lavish our adoration on someone who's a coldhearted fraud.

chairsforcheap - 2014-09-27

no i always just thought he was a funny looking round towel head to point and laugh at, carry on

infinite zest - 2014-09-27

Also, how many of us in the States, Canada, really anywhere outside of India have thought about this guy since the Clinton years? It'd be like finding something out weird that Psy did, 5 years from now. Everything else on his Wikipedia paints him as a wonderful Philanthropist.

oddeye - 2014-09-27

I think about him twice daily.

Old_Zircon - 2014-09-28

Being a big star in India still puts him ahead of almost any US celebrity, at least in music.

For comparison, R.D. Burman (who was arguably the top film composer of his generation, basically the next S.D. Burman) released something on the lines of 20 albums a year. His best selling album in the early 90s outsold the entire sales history of the entire Beatles catalog in less than a year.

When the Tunak Tunak Tun video reached western audiences, Daler's level of popularity was comparable to, I don't know, Madonna at the peak of her career?

infinite zest - 2014-09-27

Cool! This guy's also the voice of Great Tiger in the new Mike Tyson's Punch Outs.

MacGyver Style Bomb - 2014-09-27

He did his music, but not the voice.

infinite zest - 2014-09-27

Oh. In a way, that's even more awesome.

Nominal - 2014-09-27

Did he just challenge Shao Kahn?

Herr Matthias - 2014-09-28

well he handled Sub-Zero pretty well here
