Move over, portrait mode. Battlefield Earth Mode(tm) is here to shake things up.

I can remember one (of many) complaints about "The Blair Witch Project" being "It's stupid because people wouldn't bother filming all that, they'd just drop the camera and run."

So the phone was recovered from the bodies, right? nobody could survive a pyroclastic flow like that, right?

RockBolt - 2014-09-27

Now they're saying more than 30 are believed dead (as of sunday 9/28.) Unlike St. Helens, which is my only frame of reference, this one looks relatively slow-moving in comparison, which, and I'm no expert, is probably the reason why there were no warning earthquakes, because that usually signals The Big One, and you evacuate the shit out of there like they did with St. Helens. But it does look survivable, especially if you're wearing the right gear. Like you're on a hike. Someone just visiting would not be as prepared.. it's truly sad.

Yeah Mt St Helens was a lateral explosion, and the effects of it were like a nuclear weapon as a whole side of the mountain collapsed and unleashed a huge amount of pent up energy. This one is a more standard Phreatic eruption, it just happened with no warning at all (the last real eruption of Ontake was in the 80's and there was no increase of activity before this one). It is clearly a popular mountain climbing destination, so a lot of people were there. Stands to reason that those higher up and closer to the crater had a much worse chance of being overcome by ash and gasses.

I have pictures of me as a baby, on my mothers' shoulders, with an erupting Mt St Helens in the background. Shit was real, yo.
