I'm trying to imagine this as R-Rated and all I can think of is an even more disturbing movie than Fritz the Cat.

I wonder if the original screenplay's hanging out there somewhere. It was meant to be an homage to Bakshi, I think, but I'm guessing the (relative) success of Bakshi's Wizards and Lord of the Rings, combined with.. umm.. can't remember what else was out in 1988.. American Tale (?) pushed it back into the G-rated kids market. Which really sucks because Disney already had that on lockdown. Art Spiegelman spends a good portion of Maus 2 describing how Disney and other companies wanted to turn his Maus into something for kids, and how he resisted. Obviously the story here doesn't carry the emotional weight of Maus, but it does seem like voiceover talent well-wasted in a cashgrab with a couple of jokes that moms and dads might get, and a movie that nobody would see.

I see Meet the Feebles.

I envision it as a fairly innocent R, much like most of Dangerfield's off-color humor in movies like Caddyshack. Maybe some cartoon boobs thrown in for fun, and more "bone" puns. Speaking of "Bone," I had no idea that Jeff Smith was involved with this film!

That surprised me too.

(Whoops! I guess what I had to say was so important that I had to post it twice. Weird.)

That was the story behind Cool World as well. Bakashi had an R-rated concept, studio and Kim Bassigner came in and decided it would be a great movie for kids instead.

"You know what kids love? Jokes about Las Vegas, and entertainers!"

Not to mention Roger Rabbit (I still haven't read the novel, but I mean to at some point.) At least Who Framed Roger Rabbit reached a balance. Thing is, and I'm not an expert on the subject or anything, Zap Comix and the animated adaptations weren't meant as a backlash or revolution against traditional Disney and Merry Melodies animation, but just as an alternative for adults. And while it was released independently, Fritz the Cat was incredibly successful at the box office. You'd think the powers that be would've recognized that distinction.

All things considered though, R or PG13, Cool World probably would've sucked.

Sigh. This whole film is a depressing "What could have been."

"We'll paint the town yellow!"

This, Beauty and the Beast, and Rock-A-Doodle in the same year? It was Hollywood's second golden age!

Withholding stars until I hear Boomer's take on it!

Boomer The Dog - 2014-10-01

I've seen Rover Dangerfield once with my friend Ric, he's the one who knew about it and wanted me to check it out. We watched, but I don't remember much of it. We've played some songs on the radio show, I'm In Love With The Dog Next Door is cool, and a show tune.

I'll have to watch Rover again.. I did get my DVD of Millionaire Dogs, and it's good, though the voice acting could be better.
