I wonder if this is one of those games that didn't use a single MMX instruction except for the one to detect if there's MMX. Intel paid a lot of money to game companies to "enhance" their games with MMX so that they could sell more processors with that mostly-useless feature.

MMX processors were naturally a bit faster because they had a larger cache than non-MMX Pentiums, but it turned out to not be really all that useful compared to clever programming techniques (and pretty much everything in this video looks like it's just really basic environment mapping applied to simple objects).

I love that X-COM sound effect, even though it was probably used in games before X-COM that's always my association. Didn't this game get shipped in Windows 95 bundles? It says '96 in the description but I think I remember it. I also remember never bothering to play it.

I don't know, I never heard about it before this week.

I always associate that sound with Starcraft, but I never got into X-Com.

Oh wow, here's a thread in which the lead artist from the Third Dimension series comes out of the woodwork. His career path since then has been... different. http://www.highdefforum.com/gaming-systems/91464-beyond-third-dime nsion-pc-game.html
