Comic strip Annie is the only good Annie because she actually does things, like fight Nazis.

And she never sings, too!

I had the misfortune of seeing a stage production of Annie. I'm also old enough to remember when this movie hit theaters and a lot of people were crying foul that it didn't capture the musical's charm or whatever.

To those who think this is bad, I'm here to tell you: The play is even WORSE. It's SO GODDAMN BOOOORING. The most menacing Rooster gets in the play is flashing a switchblade as he describes his plans to his cohorts. They get nabbed in Warbucks' mansion before they can even try to kidnap Annie. It's got to be the dullest theater production I've seen in my life, bar none, and the movie is a vast improvement.

Last we saw her, Annie was believed to have been killed by drug dealers and fed to sharks, but in reality she was captured by a war criminal from the Balkans.

But Dick Tracy eventually took up the case:

No idea where it currently stands, but I hope it involves some truly innovative foley work:

I've spent a few spells in mental institutions. The first time, they had a movie to put in every night. It was pretty standard 1980s VHS far, like Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, etc. And Annie. They'd hold a vote every night to see which movie would be watched, and every single damn time it was Annie. I think I watched Annie about 15 times. Eventually I just started taking very long, very hot showers at this time, sometimes staying in the water for over an hour. I just couldn't stand Annie anymore.

I think I also noticed a few things about crazy people at the time: there's always a person who is obsessed with rules, laws and numerology. Every. Single. Time. They run around demanding copies of various rules, looking for work arounds to get what they want. They also try to break everything down to numbers. The other common trait is the nurse who tries to get into you by just reminding you constantly that it's all up to your attitude. I went insane ballistic at a nurse who tried to tell me my depression could be solved if I just started smiling. I told her about the world, how we're fucked no matter what we do, how survival is pure luck and wealth is completely divorced from how hard you worked. I think I earned an extra week in the booby hatch for doing that. That said, this was at Harborview in Seattle, and I was incredibly impressed by the quality of the food. Just incredible food. I ate a Reuben with apples in the sauerkraut there and it was seriously the greatest Reuben I've ever had in my life.

I like the songs in ANNIE. :-/

Or at least the songs in this movie version, I've never seen the stage musical and I think I've seen bits of the Kathy Bates Disney TV version from 1999 but I don't think it remotely compared to the John Huston movie. I can take or leave "Tomorrow", but I really like "Let's Go to the Movies", "You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile", "It's a Hard-Knock Life for Us", and, of course, "I Think I'm Gonna Like It Here", the inspiration for "This House Is Freaking Sweet!" from FAMILY GUY.

Anyway, say what you will about the comic strip or the child actors in the movie, Albert Finney, Carol Burnett, Tim Curry, and, yes, Geoffrey Holder put in great performances. Even if Punjab's mystical Indian mind powers are probably hella-politically-incorrect by today's standards (the character seems to have been cut out of the upcoming remake entirely), at least Punjab gets to be the hero at the end of the film.

@cognitivedissonance Sounds like the crazy people I run into while waiting for the #8 in LQA.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-10-07

The next time anyone here is forced to watch this movie over and over (sorry, cog), there's one thing you can look for: Carol Burnett's chin.

I heard an interview with her and she said she'd finished shooting Annie and was rewarding herself with a little plastic surgery to get a chin lift, or whatever it's called. As she was finishing her recovery, she got a call that they needed to re-shoot some scenes.

She says during the number "Easy Street," you can see her dive into the closet to get some feather boas or whatever and emerge with a completely different chin.

If it wasn't for the Seattle part I would have sworn on a stack of religious paraphernalia that I knew who you were.

Tipping my had, in part thinking of my friend who has had his share of manic/depressive episodes.

I don't even like Reubens and that sounds absolutely great!

chumbucket - 2014-10-08

My aunt was in this movie. I've seen it about 40 times.
