"the year naught" - there was no year zero.

"Christians have been happily using January for the first month of the year for millennia" - except when another date was used to mark the new year, of course. March 25 / April 1 was used in western Europe for a while, and the Byzantine Empire used September 1 (and it's hard to get more Christian than the Byzantine Empire).

God damn you, Lindybeige, your sweater is forcing you to commit factual errors, what evil will it drive you to next?

He's made stupid and factually wrong arguments plenty of times...hence why I don't get certain people's obsession with him...maybe this one is just dense enough for people to notice?

EvilHomer - 2014-10-27

Of course he's made stupid and factually incorrect arguments. He *knows* he makes stupid and factually wrong arguments from time to time, and he *invites* people to correct him, if and when he needs to be corrected. That's part of his charm! He puts himself out there, he's not afraid to make mistakes, and most importantly, he welcomes disagreement. That is, after all, what intelligent, rational people *do*; they engage in lively debate with their peers, in hopes that they can inform you, and even more importantly, that you can inform them. THAT is why people are quote-unquote "obsessed" with him. Because he's a breath of fresh air in a social media world dominated by fragile egos and partisan shouting matches.

Think about it like this, SolRo. YOU make stupid and factually wrong arguments all the time, but that doesn't mean we hate you! Well, maybe some people do, but I, for one, see you as an interesting challenge to be engaged, not as a dumb jerk who needs to shut up. That's never the right frame of mind.

You could learn a thing or two from Lindybeige.

It's also worth pointing out that the errors which Bort so cleverly spotted are tangential to Lloyd's argument, and they neither challenge his central premise (that CE/BCE is both unnecessary and impractical), nor do they invalidate the solution he proposes (a solution that is actually rather elegant).

I mostly just find something about an English guy being pedantic about stuff that I find casually interesting don't really have any opinions about oddly relaxing, sometimes I'll watch a couple of his videos in a row to unwind before bed.

Bort - 2014-10-27

Fine, take his side, but don't come frying to me when he stabs a man with a shiv made from a Jell-O Pudding Pop.

cognitivedissonance - 2014-10-27

Oh, I'll come frying to you.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-10-27

Has he walked back his climate change stance yet, EH?

EvilHomer - 2014-10-27

SPK- You're referring to this one, right? http://youtu.be/_ZHnjDJpkVc He has not walked back as far as I know, but it's worth pointing out that he is NOT a climate change denier; in fact, he states quite emphatically at 2:22 that climate change IS taking place! He is merely a conscientious objector, and he raises some valid points, both about the scientific method and about the somewhat amorphous evidence for "the lintel" (particularly in popular literature) - although I'm sure if YOU can prove it, he'd love to hear from you!

Old_Zircon - 2014-10-27

I came pretty close to submitting this myself.

fluffy - 2014-10-27

I've mostly seen CE/BCE used by Jews. Take that for what you will.

I do like his solution, until he starts strawmanning about political correctness anyway.

EvilHomer - 2014-10-28

Do you still agree with his solution, regardless? And in what ways do you consider him to be strawmanning?

fluffy - 2014-10-28

His solution makes just as much sense as BCE/CE, or even BC/AD for that matter.

He's strawmanning in that he's characterizing people who take offense at systematic oppression and erasure as being "thought police" who are championing a cause not to enact social change but to have a power trip. It's similar to calling someone an SJW.
