I like geeks, but Miss Grey is more of the art class/ drama major/ film studies geek. There's this underlying tinge of pretense that you don't get with, say, a math/ science class geek (Asia Carrera) or an adorkable anime girl with pictures of Fluttershy scribbled all over her notebook (Lexi).

That guy - I'm hardly an expert on Miss Grey's oeuvre, and I'm sure one of her PoeTV fans (I know there are a handful, as she as been mentioned here numerous times) could fill you in better than I. But from what I've seen, she's quite intelligent, well-read, and something of a modern day Renaissance-woman, having branched out into numerous fields over the years: haute-couture fashion modelling, novel writing, experimental industrial/EBM music, and acting, of the non-pornographic variety (most notably, she starred in a recent Soderbergh film).

Also, to address what I suspect may be a tinge of incredulity and well-intentioned porno-phobia in your post: please remember that for these girls, porn stardom is just a day job. Porn stars, like any other gainfully employed individual, are more than just their careers, and their personalities, talents, even flaws, can range across the entire spectrum of potential human experience. They are not one-dimensional trashy stereotypes, at least not all of them.

For example, Asia Carrera, as Pillager points out above, is quite literally a card-carrying genius: a member of Mensa and a former Math Olympian who got into porn because the pay was great and she hated her parents. She builds computers, studies macroeconomics, plays classical piano at Carnegie Hall, and then, on occasion, also happens to stuff dicks in her face.

No, I am not trying to say that intelligence and pretense are conflated terms. What I am doing is establishing that porn stars can be many things - they can be scholarly, they can be athletic, they can be slobs, they can be Christians, and yes, they can even be slightly pretentious, well-cultured hipsters. Asia is simply one example I'd use to demonstrate the breadth of the pornstar-American experience; I am not trying to imply that she is pretentious, because she is not.

Sasha Grey has already departed the porn industry for mainstream film pastures. The entire reason she did porn in the first place was as a kind of self-fulfilling (pretentious) art project that was about exploring and surpassing her boundaries or something. I won't lie; she wasn't bad to look at, and kudos to her for not only bringing back and rocking the landing strip but trademarking the 'assertive girl' experience for a while. But goddamn could she be annoying. Every scene I saw her in was about her doing some Lady Gaga on Vaudeville-esque performance, and also talking a lot while she got fucked—which always included such phrases as "fuck my little 18-year-old pussy, yeah, yeah?" over and over, ad nauseam, in a way no human who is having sex ever does. Don't get me wrong, having brains and self-awareness about this industry is good, but I think there's a difference between that and the kind of expression Sasha Grey exhibited. Sad as it is, dudes who are in the throes of masturbating don't watch porn to in anticipation of the woman bursting in with that music machine from The Grinch, whatever the fuck that was called (fuck you for letting me down, Google.)
