The magnet ban initially caused a lot of consternation in the tabletop wargaming scene. Eventually we figured out despite the apparently wide-ranging language of the new laws, they were only banning ornamental desk toy magnets, not the tiny disc magnets used for attaching heavy bolter sponsons. Because I guess kids can't physically swallow tiny disc magnets.

An Internet lawyer semi-seriously suggested that selling spherical magnets in a box with the label "Rare earth magnet spheres for no purpose whatsoever" would still be legal.

Cigarettes are legal.

The Mothership - 2014-11-21

For the last 5 seconds. Yea, that really strengthens your case.

Also, WHERE CAN I BUY THESE FINE NEW ITEMS?

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-11-21

Here's the proposed regs.

Totally reasonable, and doesn't prevent retailers from switching to another magnet formulation.

Fuck this guy. Oscar recommends 1" cubes for better fun. That and some transformer iron and you're good to go.

Fuck that, go on US Nuclear and get one of those 0 rare earth magnets the size of a tuna can that will literally snap your arm in half if you get to close to a magnetic surface while you're holding it. You'll need someone with university credentials to buy it for you, though.

Or at least do what I did and drop for a pair of magnets the size of bottlecaps that are strong enough to magnetize alnico bars for custom guitar pickups without using an unattainably expensive industrial magnetizing machine.

Really good rare earth magnets are a limited, dwindling resource and everyone should have a few handy before they start to get really expensive.

Wait, what's this about magnets getting banned? How's that possible when anyone could easily build a giant ass magnet with some wire and a power outlet?

Gmork - 2014-11-22

Or we could, you know, watch our kids more closely and not blame the magnets.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-11-22

Because you can watch kids 24 hours a day 7 days a week. You're the stupidest person on this website.

SolRo - 2014-11-23

gmork makes a stupid statement constantly made by people without kids

Old_Zircon - 2014-11-23

Kids these days have it so easy, in my day all we had to swallow were thumbtacks and marbles.
