The whole movie's pretty good, though it's clearly padded in a lot of places. But the padding generally serves a purpose, like to give the viewer a sense of what day-to-day life becomes when an unknown threat has panicked the government into deploying the army throughout Tokyo.
I've never seen the series, but apparently it was about a police squadron that uses Patrol Labors (Labors = mech suits). At some point before this movie, the squadron was broken up, and they have to get back together to sort out the unknown threat, which is playing the government like a fiddle.

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-12-11 The TV series was much more lighthearted and significantly lighter on the Japanese political drama.

freedoom  - 2014-12-11 Scenes like this are typical Mamuro Oshii filler. long tracking shots of cities, sometimes with just music, sometimes with deep conversation or monologuing. Ghost in the Shell has at least two of these scenes in it that just drag on and on while you are just wanting to get back to the story. It's extra long scenes like this that make him a shit director. If you ever watch Stray Dogs it's 90 minutes of shit like this plus 5 minutes of action at the end of the movie. There's a scene in the movie where we watch the main characters eating ramen for what feels like 10 minutes. He has made a few good movies but he puts in way too much stuff like this.

Bort - 2014-12-11 There's a scene towards the end of this where the one cop is explaining how he figured out what's going on, but he has his back to the camera the whole time, so for at least a minute there's just a still image on the screen. That is some lazy cartooning, I have to admit.
But I like the story well enough to forgive the cutting of corners. I feel like the story here is driven by intelligent characters rather than contriving just enough stupidity to get everyone to fight.
