Something about the combination of soothing new age music and watching someone suck at Tetris really stresses me out. Still, I love that sound. Around 4:45 in particular. Put Lauren Mayberry on the vocals and you've got a hit single!

fluffy - 2014-12-11

holy shit this player IS terrible

also the soothing background visuals don't help

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-12-11

"We've got a vertical playfield that people will see on horizontal screens. We're going to have a ton of blank space."

"Say, have you got those snapshots of your vacation to Colorado handy?"

Needtodestroy - 2014-12-11

The single most "vaporware" thing that has ever existed.

That's right, I'm hip.

Waugh - 2014-12-11

Do you feel inspired to open a nitrous oxide bar, too?

spikestoyiu - 2014-12-11

I feel like I'm missing something here. How is it vaporware if it existed?

Old_Zircon - 2014-12-11

Needtodestroy you are maybe a little too hip.

Waugh - 2014-12-11

PLEASE TELL ME YOU NERDS AREN'T ACTUALLY DULL ENOUGH TO DEBATE THE DEFINITION OF FUCKING "VAPORWAVE"

Wander - 2014-12-11

HE WROTE "VAPORWARE" NOT "VAPORWAVE" YOU CRAZYPANTS.

AND SINCE IT CAME OUT I'M ALSO PRETTY CONFUSED.

Old_Zircon - 2014-12-11

I'm dull enough to lurk and watch other people debate it, because despite the fact that a minority of it is actually really good, the bulk of it and the surrounding conversation is the musical equivalent of watching Deviantart furries argue about the relative merits of their TOTALLY ORIGINAL CONTENT SONIC RECOLORS, plus as a bonus it tends to really piss off crusty old rock guys and technique nerds.

Plus people inventing ersatz genres and then other people taking them REALLY SERIOUSLY even though genres in general are complete horseshit that only really exist as a marketing tool for the old music industry - that's pretty funny, too.

StanleyPain - 2014-12-11

I think you meant vaporwave.

Old_Zircon - 2014-12-11

PLEASE TELL ME YOU NERDS AREN'T ACTUALLY DULL ENOUGH TO DEBATE THE DEFINITION OF FUCKING "VAPORWAVE"

spikestoyiu - 2014-12-11

Asking a question is debating now, apparently.

Is vaporwave the evolution of chillwave? Is this chillwave?

EvilHomer - 2014-12-11

Well I'll be damned.

Waugh - 2014-12-11

Holy shit you're right, I consistently misread it.

Waugh - 2014-12-11

Because that actually does make more sense than vaporware.

huene - 2014-12-11

All my stars.

Old_Zircon - 2014-12-11

That Wikipedia entry's not half bad, but the Adam Harper article they reference s just shockingly off base, like worse than Pitchfork. So bad he actually wrote a mea culpa followup a year later where he spent the first half enumerating everything in the first one that he got wrong because he actually didn't know what he was talking about and had hardly actually heard any of the music at that point.

This is the second one:

http://www.dummymag.com/features/essay-invest-in-vaporwave-fut ures

It still degenterates into typical grandiose, semi-bullshit critic-wank when he gets to talking about individual artists, but the part where he apologizes for the first article is pretty good.

infinite zest - 2014-12-11

I have a friend who does vaporwave, it's basically DJ screw but sampling more from 80s pop and disco than 90s hip hop and slowing it down. Like this:

infinite zest - 2014-12-11

This might be a better example actually.

Old_Zircon - 2014-12-11

Infinite Zest, who's your friend?

Most of it's like you describe, some of it's 100% original composition like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZjRa73vOPU

and some of the best of it, in my opinion, is a blend of the two.

Old_Zircon - 2014-12-11

Also, IZ, are you on the Poe facebook group (either one of them)? I forget. If so, I'm the guy with the Realistic MG-1 for a profile picture in case you didn't know.

Waugh - 2014-12-11

Nostalgia for the false promises of the 80s makes an uncomfortable lot of sense today. http://www.poetv.com/video.php?vid=137381

Old_Zircon - 2014-12-11

The good stuff isn't nostalgic at all, though, it's borderline dystopian. The nostalgic stuff is mostly the lazy Tumblr junk.

Old_Zircon - 2014-12-11

Which actually brings me to my biggest complaint about this stiff: the hotspots or it seem to be tumblr, 4chan and Reddit, which really raises the bullshit ratio to almost untenable proportions. Especially Tumblr.

Needtodestroy - 2014-12-11

Whoa now. You may all blame autocorrect. I did indeed mean vaporwave.

infinite zest - 2014-12-11

I was looking around for his bandcamp or something but couldn't find anything. He mostly just did stuff for his skate videos. He also sort of had a big falling out with my housemates and I think he's in Texas now, or New Jersey, Germany.. I miss him. Anyway here's one of his videos. That's my neighborhood too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZjRa73vOPU

Ya I'm on poe facebook; I think the last thing I posted was about meeting talking to who I believe was TFL Bill. I haven't seen him since.

Old_Zircon - 2014-12-11

Oh man, I forgot about that.

Old_Zircon - 2014-12-11

You accidentally posted the Pyravid video I posted earlier.

Unless that was some kind of metajoke.

Waugh - 2014-12-11

See? I just have better intuition than these boring knowitalls.

infinite zest - 2014-12-11

Oh shit! Always remember kids, copy before you paste :)
Here is he
http://youtu.be/0k8wLTC6jTo

That's a Canadian band but a lot of stuff he was working on had a lot more manipulation.

gravelstudios - 2014-12-11

on a Tetris related note: I hope that Alexey Pajitnov has started actually making money off of all the newer versions of Tetris out there.

fluffy - 2014-12-11

He has.

Old_Zircon - 2014-12-11

The Richard Berry of games.

infinite zest - 2014-12-11

What about all the little free games that are basically Tetris but with a few minor changes, like fruit instead of block shapes and stuff? Is the Tetris formula as public domain as the concept of 2D platforming and shoot 'em ups and stuff?

gravelstudios - 2014-12-12

I think there's a lot of gray area with falling block puzzle games. I do remember reading somewhere that the concept of ending a game title with "tris" is trademarked by the Tetris company.

Cube - 2014-12-11

It's for adults. By adults. Not just one Philip -- Philips.
