Eminem was huge to me, back when he first came out. I thought of him as a rebel and a hero to free speech, but now I see him as a mere whiner who based his career on little more than shock value and pissing off the gay community. I haven't really paid much attention to his recent stuff, but it seems to me, his awesome flow and vocabulary has been wasted on songs about his own fame.

I don't know if Eminem was ever that big on free speech. He certainly liked it when it was his own stuff on the line, but I don't recall him ever going up to bat for people he hated, like hardcore Christians, any woman, or guys who weren't himself. That is the litmus test for being a hero to free speech, not merely rapping songs about beating your wife.

As for wasting his flow on songs about his own fame, that's at least 90% of all rap right there. It's braggadocio. You've got a few exceptions here and there, like Rhymeberry, Matisyahu, or Lady Sov (before the fame went to her head), but Eminem was just one of those guys who goes with the herd.

Yeah, I feel the same way. Most everyone I knew had the debut album in high school so I sort of know it by heart. But between that and The Chronic 2000, Biggie Tupac and Puff Daddy, I sort of thought 100% of hip hop fell into a few easy categories. But even in a predominately white city like mine growing up, there was some great underground hip hop but I didn't know about it. In college though, I discovered a whole new world of hip hop, like Eyedea, Aesop Rock, Cannibal Ox, I could go on and on and on. Even old school stuff like Tribe Called Quest and Pharcyde were brand new to me. This is all thanks to a website called hiphopinfinity and a couple of awesome housemates. After that, I just didn't really think about Eminem or 90% of hip hop anymore, just like I don't with 90% of rock.

I rag on John Cena a lot, and I think the mane reason why I'm so anti-Cena is because, when I first saw him back in 2002 or 03 or whenever it was, Cena was doing that whole white-boy rapper gimmick thing. I guess I associated him with Eminem, which coloured my opinion of him and caused me to write off the future Hulk Hogan Jr as a stupid asshole straight from day one. I can only imagine how my life might have changed had John Cena used a cool gimmick instead, like a vampire, or a straightedge punk rocker!

That said, John Cena seems to be a genuinely nice rapper, and an all around decent human being. Sure, he trash talks and brags a little bit in some of his raps, but he also spends his time visiting sick children and honoring military personnel like some musclebound Bob Hope! Maybe if Eminem spent more time filling Make a Wish requests and less time rapping his mouth off about the joys of being a dick to people, he'd have a more fulfilling life, and wouldn't have to prop up his fragile ego by acting like a big child all the damn time.

I kinda feel the same way about Kid Rock. I think it was on here, but he goes to an adult with down syndrome's birthday party, gives him one of his guitars and just hangs out for a bit drinking a beer. At first I assumed he had done or said something to piss off the ADA like when Kanye told everyone in the audience to stand up and the "stunt" was sort of an apology, but nope! He just wanted to do it and was in the area. I might not like his music, but he seems like a genuinely nice guy to do something cool like that.

As for Cena, I really can't say. I always get Cena and CM Punk confused, mostly because I haven't watched or paid much attention to WWF/E since the late 90s and Cena_mark's username always makes me see "CM."
