Does anyone else feel the hand-wringing hysteria over e-cigs is misplaced and, frankly, stupid.

So what if they still deliver nicotine? They're still better for users than inhaling smoke.

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-01-03

There's little to no information on what the long term health effects of e-cigarettes are though. Sure, they're probably better than cigarettes, but I doubt it's harmless to administer chemicals into your body several times a day either. It's probably better to just be cautious until the data is in. And even then, why bother?

Pretty sure it's better than burning the leaves and inhaling the smoke, and probably fewer additives that cigarettes, but..

Nicotine is massively addictive, I still get very strong urges to smoke.

Seems nicotine on it's own can also speed up tumor growth, and strong indication that it can greatly increase chances for colon cancer (personal interest in this one). You'll have to read up regarding other cancers, but I suspect it will be similar.

At least one Dr told me it slows down the bodies healing process; cuts, burns, bruises, etc. will take longer to heal if you're smoking.

I wish I'd never touched the stuff, sweet sweet death sticks.

eh... maybe should have googled before writing. Nicotine on it's own may not be addictive or as addictive, jury's still out. Still, the cancer related stuff still seems to stands.

I overheard some real slags at a bar angrily bitching up a storm about how it was bullshit that the FDA wanted to regulate e-cig juice. Why wouldn't you want that shit to be regulated? For all these dummies knew they could be sucking down anti-freeze, their main concern seemed to be that regulation would jack up the prices.

The best use for these things is to slowly wean yourself off nicotine and quit smoking dammit.

Wow, this video.

I don't know what the "hand-wringing" is, precisely. More than anything else? The problem with ecigs, as with cigarettes, is that youth become addicted, and that early addiction is hard to break. With cigarettes, youth were targeted directly. Are they with ecigs? Yes. Plenty of new coverage on this, including NYT. That's not hand-wringing, that's a social issue that needs attention.

There are thankfully a lot of researchers with ecigs in their sights. Initial studies have found that they have less of everything than cigarettes, but there are some differences in compounds and how they (particularly solvents/aerosols) decompose over time. Second-hand vape, just like second-hand smoke, is another concern.

(Also, the jury is not out on nicotine addiction. The question isn't whether it's addictive, the question is how and why.)

You'd better believe that tobacco businesses are already running as much interference as possible. Example: the "Chief Medical Officer" of Nicoventures giving talks at medical symposiums.

Of course businesses are going to target youth: they need future customers. Is there some reason it's a good idea to be naive about addiction and harm, and to try to paint concern over it as "hand-wringing" because it kills more slowly than cigarettes? Kids have it so good today: their addictions will cost them just as much money, but only a fourth will die prematurely as compared to their grandparents. Talk about progress!

The Moral panic over e-cigs is garbage. E-cigs are nicotine and propylene glycol which is harmless in its food-grade form, and in fact a lot of companies now aren't even using glycol anymore, but rather a vegetable oil substance which is natural.
Nicotine is bad for you. Addiction is bad for you. But, in terms of comparison, e-cigs are about as bad for you as eating unhealthy when compared to smoking real cigarettes which are about 10 times worse for you on many different levels. There is a pretty good amount of evidence to suggest that e-cigs don't help people quit smoking, but either just addict them to those or bring people back to smoking normal cigs, but it would be nice if people would stop wanting the government to constantly intervene any time people want to do something stupid that harms only themselves.

Old_Zircon - 2015-01-03

I'm pretty sure the only thing people actually put in these things is hash oil.

Monkey Napoleon - 2015-01-04

Actually, vaping is becoming kind of a big deal. It would not surprise me at all to learn that more people by far use them for nicotine than thc.

It's worth mentioning that e-liquid ingredients aren't a mystery, and while there haven't been a ton of studies done... studies have been coming in for several years and their number is steadily increasing.

I didn't like the various types of side effects, and I was concerned about the long term health risks, but I actually really liked smoking. I liked the ritual of it, and I liked the act of doing it. Now, I get to keep doing something I enjoy while saving a boatload of money and mitigate the risk down to the level of walking alongside a busy city street.

People are passionate about it because my experience is typical.
