Goetz was still kind of an asshole, but doesn't really compare to Zimmerman. Goetz had been attacked by three muggers previously. He was injured during the attack and the only assailant caught received a slap on the wrist.
It could be argued Goetz suffered from PTSD. Even if you go by his victims' own testimony, they surrounded an obviously nervous man and asked for money. They claim they were "panhandling" but you don't need four people to politely ask one guy for five bucks. Anyone, regardless of their ethnicity or the ethnicities of the beggars would be nervous in that case. It was their bad luck to pull the stunt with an angry, frightened man carrying a concealed weapon.
It still doesn't excuse the way everyone seemed to hold Goetz up as a hero.
Zimmerman, on the other hand, went out looking for a chance to be a vigilante hero.
