Somebody had way too much fun making this.

Looks a lot better than Scream.

Speaking of which, was this the origin of the phone call scene? I can't think of another horror movie that did it before this. I always thought it originated with Scream.

I think the urban myth dates back to the 50s.

infinite zest - 2015-01-16

Oh cool! Yeah, I knew it was an old urban legend of sorts, but had never heard of that movie. And here I was thinking that Scream 1 had some pretty innovative ideas and that the first Scary Movie was actually pretty funny..

I loved this film. It's a lot broader than Scream and those movies, but it was a lot of fun.

I learned something about the Civil War.

One of my all-time favorites. I had it on VHS for the longest time until a fungus ruined most of my tapes.

I need to get it on DVD or, if they even make it, Blu-Ray.

VHS fungus is an awesome concept.

Old_Zircon - 2015-01-16

I've been rescuing tapes from VHS fungus lately. You need a beater VCR, some lint free fabric and popsicle sticks to make a swab, some 99% or better isopropyl, and if youre going to be digitizing them you'll want a nice timebase corrector to let you capture the more damaged parts without dropping frames (fortunately nobody wants SD analog video gear anymore, so you can get a broadcast grade TBC for pennies on the dollar; I got an almost flawless For.a model that used to retail for nearly 00 not long ago for under on eBay last month). Probably not worth it for something that can be bought on DVD (although sometimes the DVD versions aren't the same, it's pretty common for them to crop 4:3 films down to 16:9 for new widescreen TVs when they put them out on DVD, kind of the opposite of pan-and-scan and just as annoying), but it's definitely worth doing if you have something rare.

A lot of movies were shot open matte 1.33:1, framed with the intention of being matted in movie theatres (1.85:1) but knowing that home video would expose the whole frame. Though occasionally they forgot to protect that part of the frame and you can see shit like microphones.

boner - 2015-01-17

So I think it's mainly the movies shot with anamorphic lenses that get pan-and-scanned, because the film didn't have extra picture on the top & bottom. Though I guess it's possible some 1.85:1 movies were matted in the camera.
