Heh.. I was about to say "hey wait a minute I had this game" but that was Strife, not Strafe. I'll get it if they make a linux version, but I wonder if it'll have the same system requirements as Quake did for optimum performance circa 1996? I have an old Dell Laptop from 2000 hanging out somewhere..(?)

divinitycycle - 2015-01-20

Now this is how you sell a game!

fedex - 2015-01-21

hell yeah!

oddeye - 2015-01-20

I don't get it? Was the game made in 1996 or not then? Are they trying to remake it with updated graphics that they need the cash for?

sasazuka - 2015-01-20

It's a new game but with retro-graphics that would have been possible on a high-end PC circa 1996 (well, maybe, I don't know if they could have done all those 3D characters on screen at once in actual 1996).

craptacular - 2015-01-20

looks like the quake engine with software rendering. given how great Brutal Doom was, i'm cautiously optimistic about this title. i'll pick it up on steam on release if it's or less.

oddeye - 2015-01-21

Why would they make a new game that purposefully looks like old crap from like 100 years ago? They need the money to hire a graphics programer fella then?

EvilHomer - 2015-01-21

It's cheaper, it's easier, and you can cash in on the nostalgia market even if your game is objectively crap.

Retro 8-bit looking games make up a huge part of the indie gaming world these days, not to mention the popularity of the pixilated Minecraft, but I'm assuming that if they were all released around Dreamcast, PS2 and other FPSs around that time, people would think they were shit because any nostalgia was reserved for real NES games, or in the FPS world, Unreal Tournament or Half-Life. Flash forward 15 years, they're all the rage. Making a game that targets itself to a fictional mid-90s audience that didn't think Quake was EXTREME enough is a bit of a stretch, but as long as it's funny and gory enough, I could see it work. A lot of gaming in the 90s should never be spoken of again, but a milemarker like Quake isn't one of them.

On the other hand, it's single-player only, and I'm sure there's plenty of Quake mods out there already that let you do things like this.

oddeye - 2015-01-21

But why make it look like shit?

gravelstudios - 2015-01-21

I know it's nitpicky of me, but I get annoyed when people make videos with that 'old VHS' look, but still make it widescreen. If you actually recorded a commercial off of TV in 1996, it would have been 4:3.

infinite zest - 2015-01-21

I get annoyed with the 'old VHS' look in the first place. Especially if it's supposed to be 1996, when most promotional materials for games were distributed on CDs in the first place.

Can't wait to hear JHMF explain how this is what video games are really like.

Gmork - 2015-01-21

This was never meant to be a design choice. This was a result of hardware limitation.

Retro-style shit is the most pathetic, pandering, nostalgia-fueled wannabe garbage art style that you can possibly shove into a game.

If you've got a good core of gameplay, you can get away with it sometimes, but the amount of games that TRY to pull it off is nowhere near the amount that tried and succeeded.

Aubrey McFate - 2015-01-21

I'm going to play the shit out of this and love it.
