Sounds like this,

but a lot more fun.

I've been wanting to start a punk/metal band for interested students within the organization I work for (it's an arts organization for adults with developmental disabilities), but it gets shut down, not because it's a bad idea but because they don't want their name associated with divey punk bars and the very real possibility that some asshole in the audience would should out something derogatory, which are both valid objections. But it kinda sucks because I'd be jeopardizing my own job if I organized such a project. Le sigh..

as a state psych hospital/mental health social worker, i can affirm that this would never get approved in the US, which is a fucking shame.

Do a heavy psychedelic band instead, the organization around here has one and it's fantastic and more wholesome.

I saw them play to hundreds at a city-sponsored outdoor festival this summer, it's completely possible to do in this country, although touring might be tough.

Yeah I remember when you posted these guys before. They rock. I'd like to do psych; all things considered I like psych more than punk or metal, but I don't get that much time to talk to the students, I just know that a few of them like The Clash, Slayer, Pantera. But they're really busy with their first musical so it could be a distraction, but I'm still gonna figure out a way in the future. The festival scene is tough out here, but I might just be thinking of the big ones. In the wintertime it's all VERY religious and because rain's usually expected into mid-june everything gets scrunched together (which is funny, because I can't remember the last time it really rained here besides a drizzle and it's sunny and in the mid 60s) into a 2-month timeframe. Except for the Rose Festival, which sucks and it rains every year anyway. I could do it anyway, but it'd be nice to be under a 501c3 and be able to write grants for musical equipment, donations and such, as well as publicity, which is why I'd like to do it through this organization.

It's funny; I'm sure we've all had the "let's start a band" conversations at the bar which never amount to anything.. if these dudes had a practice space and access to the instruments, I guarantee that they'd learn said instrument and write an album's worth of material within a month or two.

I think denying people the right to be themselves is a goddamn atrocity. Sure some asshole may shout "retard" at them, but that could happen anywhere. Why not put a microphone in front of them so they can shout "fuck you!" right back at them?

infinite zest - 2015-01-23

Oh nobody's denying anybody anything, but the structure of the organization is a once-a-week rehearsal, and most of my job is just in development the rest of the time. But that means they only see each other once a week, and although they do form friendships outside of class sometimes, it's the atmosphere that's important. I plan on bringing in more choreography classes for next semester as well as poetry workshops, and get longer hours for the venue rental, among other things. I'd love for one day to have enough to get our own studio, but I'm not the one calling the shots.

Believe me, these people have spent their entire lives being called "retard" by some asshole, and it doesn't phase them. I also work as a contracted caregiver and we take the bus, do things, and hear it all the fucking time and it's me who's about to turn around and clock the motherfucker in the face, not my client. Last time it happened, we just sat there and continued to talk, and as we got off the bus he just flipped the guy off. Fucking badass.

It's more the nature of this particular organization. It's relatively new and they don't want to take risks too early on with their name attached, which makes sense, but it's hard to convince them that we even need a fucking facebook page for fear that it could be hacked by assholes who have nothing better to do than cyberbully a small non-profit. The world's not that evil, and maybe one day it'll happen, but by no means is there any denial of self-expression, it's just not the vision at this time. Hopefully it will be soon.

Yeah makes sense. Glad to hear you have such a cool job. It's damned hard sometimes though, I'd imagine.
