I went to Universal in Orlando, mostly for the Simpsons area. There's a gift shop there set up to look like the Kwik-E-Mart and they sell these tiny license plates. There is a spot for Bort license plates and they are out.

Seems like they put a lot of effort into making everything just right, including references like that which most kids wouldn't get. Did you get a beer at Moe's? Is the bartender surly?

Interesting side-note, I recently found out that the bar I've been recently frequenting was probably the actual model for Moe's Tavern. I used to think it was this place in Springfield, OR. And it makes sense, because Evergreen Terrace is just a couple of blocks away. And although it was always a pet store when I was a kid, the adjacent shop used to be a musical instrument store.

I did have a beer at Moe's. They have a Love-Matic Grandpa! The bartender was actually very friendly. They run a bunch of Moe's-related Simpsons clips on a single television above the bar (like in Moe's), but a lot of the jokes cut out early, which is weird. But still... a nice touch.

The beer was pretty good. They only let you order two, max. Must be due to some weird Florida law. Or maybe it enables them to get around a proper liquor license? No clue. But it's brewed by a local brewery, specifically for Moe's. They don't relabel one of their other beers. This is all according to the bartender.

Cool! The two-drink thing is probably just because it's a theme park, although I see videos of people drunk at Disneyland all the time.. definitely not a Florida rule though.. last time I was there I got mildly shitfaced off of surprisingly strong 75 cent margaritas from this little chain called Flannigans. It's funny that Duff is technically a microbrew though. Does it taste like I'd imagine (somewhere between Miller High Life and Pabst Blue Ribbon? And yes I can tell the difference, for better or worse) or is it more typical microbrew fare and hoppier like a Pale ale?

spikestoyiu - 2015-01-21

Thankfully it's not a pale ale because I'm fucking sick of them already. It's actually an amber lager, similar to Yuengling.

fedex - 2015-01-21

I would almost go to Florida for that

infinite zest - 2015-01-21

Nice. There's like a million IPAs, IIPAs, CDAs, blah blah blah out here but my favorite is just a Rainier with a pint glass filled with a bit of orange juice. I was looking up if there was a way to order it, but it looks like I'll have to go to Florida if I want to try the real thing. What sucks is there was a Duff Beer in New Zealand which predated the Simpsons by quite some time, and Fox made them change it to McDuff. It's just like the high-priced Lawyers vs. Lionel Hutz, because that's all the legal expertise that the small brewery could afford.

EvilHomer - 2015-01-21

Yes, yes, but what's its rating on BeerAdvocate?

infinite zest - 2015-01-21

It actually got a 76 on BA

This is what I usually drink, with the orange juice. It's a fucking dollar.

EvilHomer - 2015-01-22

That's better than I'd expect! 76 is well below the cutoff for my beer snob friends, but Duff was supposed to be a riff on Bud/ Coors/ macro crap, so it easily could have been worse. At least they're putting in some effort.

Question for anyone who watches New Simpsons: Does New Homer support craft brewery and the beer hipster subculture? Have they addressed this issue on the show? I know they did an episode about hipsters and artisinal donuts, but surely, with Homer's love of beer, he'd be having some run-ins with craft beer, too.

infinite zest - 2015-01-22

It wouldn't surprise me if they made a reference to it in the Portlandia crossover episode where all the hipsters move to Springfield, but I haven't seen it. But Homer's been sampling other beers for some time, I believe beginning with Red Tick beer.

EvilHomer - 2015-01-22

"Needs more dog!" is a stock critique for beer 'round these parts.

spikestoyiu - 2015-01-21

Oh, and they serve Flaming Moe's, but they're non-alcoholic. I didn't try one. They also have the jukebox, but I didn't think to check for "It's Raining Men".

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-01-21

missed opportunity.

infinite zest - 2015-01-21

That's a bummer. Most bars I have been to know how to make Flaming Moes (without the cough syrup), but like Spanish Coffees, Long Islands, or Bloody Marys, you just pissed off your bartender if you ordered one, especially when it's busy. There was this donut shop here that took the idea a bit too literally and injected their donuts with Nyquil, kinda sorta not telling anyone what the secret ingredient was until the FDA began an investigation.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-01-21

The video cut out before they introduced Disgruntled Goat.

infinite zest - 2015-01-21

Uncle Ant, Ku Klux Klam too.. Disgruntled Goat did have his moments though.

The Mothership - 2015-01-21

Agreed, the lesser known characters bit is a good follow-up bit, but worth subtracting a star? Really binro, that's cold.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-01-22

ENOUGH WITH WANTING FIVE GOD-DAMNED STARS FOR EVERYTHING.

It's shoddy video filmed from TV, most likely with a smartphone.

Why don't you talk to admin about switching to a "thumbs-up/thumbs-down" system in you don't like people doling out less than five stars?

fedex - 2015-01-22

Hey it's my sub and not a single fuck was given this day

Bort - 2015-01-22

Ah, disgruntled_goat ... dude could be ill-tempered but, right or wrong, he was always speaking from the heart. Now I'm getting nostalgic for the shout-fests from a decade ago.
