So far I like this show. He's not funny in the way that Colbert was, but really, having two shows back-to-back, often covering the same main stories from two different (but really the same) perspectives seemed a bit de trop. So I like the focusing on one particular issue for 30 minutes.

The "If Stevie Nicks ate a baby" thing rubbed me the wrong way though.

Meerkat - 2015-01-22

I like it, but I'm kind of finding better ways to spend 20 minutes. I PVR'd the first few episodes and watched them and then deleted the timer.

John Oliver he ain't.

Meerkat - 2015-01-22

Also maybe Americans relate better, the black culture stuff doesn't really work up here.

Q: What do you call a black Canadian?
A: "Hoser".

infinite zest - 2015-01-22

Yeah, it's definitely not something I'd make the time to watch, just like I never did with Colbert or Daily Show, but it's definitely clip-worthy and if a topic interests me, then I'll probably watch the whole thing. He kinda reminds me of a funnier Tavis Smiley, and not just because he's black. The Cosby discussion seems pretty much the same as what we've all been hearing for the last couple of months, but I like the fact that he said what I've been saying the whole time: in the wake of accusations you don't just ignore it and go on touring as if nothing ever happened.

As far as the Stevie Nicks thing goes, here's a better analogy. Conor Oberst (AKA Bright Eyes) was under fire earlier this year because of rape allegation made by a girl on a forum, that stated he raped her ten years ago (prior to the forum posting.) He's not huge like some musicians, but has a large cult following, most of which are girls (and their jealous boyfriends) and the news hit right around the time he was releasing his new album and touring in support of it. What he did was continue to tour, but addressed the issue immediately with a statement and a defamation lawsuit, with most of the money, if won, going towards shelters for abused women. After the woman admitted she made the whole thing up, he was cool enough to drop the charges completely, even though a lot of his long-time fans didn't buy the album or see him on tour (he's big enough where you'd probably have to get tickets at least a few months in advance.) If I dropped a couple hundred dollars on Stevie Nicks tickets and found out that she ate a baby, fuck no I wouldn't go, and I would hope that she cancelled the tour and apologized, or at least addressed the allegations, whether she ate it or not. And I like Stevie Nicks too, especially her 80s stuff.

So yeah, Wilmore's right: let's say a couple of women are indeed making it up for whatever reason, reducing the number down to the upper 20s or lower 30s.. the correct response to that is "FUCK YOU." For all anyone really knows, everybody made up the stories. But for Cosby to just go right along like nothing ever happened, allegedly or otherwise is such bullshit.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-01-22

Nobody ever steps into a talk show and just shines right away. Conan O'Brian was awkward and unfunny when he went from SNL/Simpsons writer to talk show host. Dave Letterman's morning talk show bombed. Jimmy Fallon wasn't very good at first. And John Oliver took a little bit of time to get comfortable in Jon Stewarts chair. I didn't even like Colbert at first. Considering all that, I think Wilmore is doing great.

This guy was awesome as "Senior Black Correspondent" on the Daily Show. I can't think of anyone from TDS who could handle this better. Jason Jones has the talent, but he's too much a Stephen Colbert type to follow Stephen Colbert. This could turn out to be something fresh.

infinite zest - 2015-01-22

Yeah. It wasn't Wilmore who made the Nicks analogy either but one of the roundtable guests (in case anyone's tuning in late, the original one was the full episode which cuts out the part I was talking about.) He's pretty much made up his mind w/r/t Cosby. It kind of reminds me of a perfect mix between Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn and Real Time with Bill Maher. Like him or not, Quinn's panel was usually pretty dumb, as is Quinn, and like him or not, Bill Maher is too much of an opinionated asshole to be a host with a very smart panel. In either case, potentially good debates would end up like the McLaughlin Group.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-01-23

Honestly, I'm not sure if I understand the objection to the Stevie Nicks reference. It was obviously meant to be ridiculous. Is there something I'm missing?

infinite zest - 2015-01-23

Yeah, I get that it's not being serious, but it's also playing the sympathy card for those who bought their tickets before the allegations and therefore defend their attendance at the show, vicariously taking Cosby's side, even though I assume that they all think rape is wrong, especially if they bought the tickets based on Cosby's reputation before the allegations. And it's kinda too bad that they get lumped in with being on Cosby's side, because if they're not, why are they at the show? Because they dropped a couple hundred bucks on it? Not good enough for the protesters and the media. In the wake of a scandal, alleged or proven, the show must not go on until it's resolved, or at least addressed.

Old_Zircon - 2015-01-22

So technical question, did Comedy Central just eliminate full screen mode altogether about a year ago, or is that just for people running Adblock? Becauseit's been seriously impairing my CC viewing experience.

infinite zest - 2015-01-22

It works fine for me and I use adblock, but not for ads within videos. Is there such a thing? If nothing else, CC's ads just piss me off because it's almost always the same two commercials over and over. Nothing makes me want to buy a product or service less than seeing it 10 times in a row.

Discordia - 2015-01-22

Fullscreen works fine for me with Adblock. Via chrome on OSX. I block everything. Firefox has always been hit and miss. Worked well for dailyshow but not colbert.

Old_Zircon - 2015-01-22

I hAVEN'T EVEN GOTTEN THE FULLSCREEN BUTTON ON A cOMEDY cENTRAL VIDEO SINCE SOMETIME LAST SPRING. I've tried it in Opera, Firefox and Chrome, on my own computer and my parents' when I was visiting over the holidays. No volume control on the player anymore, either.

Whitelisting it in Adblock and Ghostery didn't do anything.

And fuck no I'm not going to fix that caps lock.

infinite zest - 2015-01-22

That's really weird. I was having trouble with my computer playing fullscreen YT videos for a while. Like, it'd go full screen but the size of the video would be the same surrounded by blackness. It had something to do with my Ubuntu but when I updated it magically went back to normal, so it could have something to do with the OS and not the browser, assuming you guys use the same ones..

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-01-22

It's not the ads that bug me. It's awesome that I don't need cable to watch comedy central. For me it's the big complicated webpage that takes 10 minutes to load and seems to go to 20 or 30 different urls, for all the crap that's embedded in it.. Hulu has plenty of ads, but it doesn't do that. Neither does Youtube. TV networks do it. I've never seen a network that doesn't have a horribly bloated website.

infinite zest - 2015-01-22

Yeah Adult Swim's even worse. It's like the web designers are just using their own company computers as a benchmark, forgetting that much of their audience has much slower machines. I don't have a super-speedy computer, but yeah. YT, Hulu, even projectfreetv (with all of its un-get-around-able (as far as I know) pop-ups) work fine.

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-01-23

I get fullscreen but it's choppy on my old laptop. But, I get only small screen and no choppy frames on my new one. I use AdBlock on both.
So yeah, weird stuff.

Say what you will, I'd still put Chip Hitler in my werewolf movie.

Old_Zircon - 2015-01-22

I'm liking this so far. I'm glad they went with the panel format instead of interviews, I hadn't watched a Colbert interview in years. Most of the time it's someone plugging something, anyhow.

takewithfood - 2015-01-22

So far this has turned out better than I expected. Colbert was always a little too energetic for me at 11:30 (Christ, I feel old saying that but it's true).

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-01-22

It looks bad for Cos, and it's time to start saying so.

I didn't want to believe it, either. You know, the way the deniers talk about these women on the internet and whatnot, you wonder if they're aware that most of these women are in their 50s and 60s.

Adjuvant - 2015-01-23

I really like Wilmore in this format. I only knew him from his Senior Black Correspondent segments on TDS, so I was worried his style on this show was going to be more of that "Well, Jon..." affected absurdist straight-man delivery. Instead, I like his more dynamic yet relaxed demeanor on this show. The panels are actually pretty fun, too. I hope he keeps it up.

StanleyPain - 2015-01-23

I like this show so far. Colbert was great, but the premise of it being a character and all that kinda wore thin for me pretty fast. I like the way this show is set up in that it's not really trying to be another Daily Show, but at the same time trying to deal with topical shit which must be a nightmare for the writers. "What, we're on after the Daily Show?"

infinite zest - 2015-01-23

Yeah I've watched them all now (all four of them that is) and the only part I'd change is the semi-clueless "expert" segment that's on before the panel. The Cosby one was funny, but I didn't think it'd be a recurring thing. Hopefully they'll find a better use for filler time, but otherwise great show. Were I to watch this on TV (Daily Show into Nightly Show) it'd be kind of what I wished Last Week Tonight was. It's a great show but it spends too much of its 30 minutes, once a week, on one topic. And that's how PBS Newshour works too, but that's on every night. Daily Show gets a little ADHD and it's nice to have a show immediately after that tackles just one of the topics, like "oh yeah.. that thing that happened."
