Fun fact: Edison was responsible for the electric chair.

SolRo - 2015-02-02

Fun fact 2; Edison was such a vindictive-moneygrubbing-steal-from-everyone-"I will bury you" prick that scrooge mcduck is not based on him.

Because it was a kids show, and you cant have such terrible people in a kids show.

EvilHomer - 2015-02-03

psst *TOPSY*

*TOOOOPPPPSSSSYYYYY*

BiggerJ - 2015-02-03

In order to show that rival Nikola Tesla's preferred alternating current was less safe than his own preferred direct current, Edison once electrocuted an elephant with alternating current electricity.

TeenerTot - 2015-02-03

I just saw a doc on Edison. Turns out electrocuting all sorts of animals was a bit of a hobby for him.

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-02-03

I also saw that fucker. Somehow, they got through the whole of the ugly business of Edisons rivalry with Westinghouse without ever mentioning the name Tesla. AC was, according to this doc, invented "in Europe" by some unknown punter(s).

Also not mentioned was that Tesla's first job in America was working for Edison, where he invented some new tech for DC generation, which Edison stole. He promised to pay Tesla royalties, and never did. Tesla quit.

Very much later, when Tesla was an old man, the IEEE thought he should be lauded and he was awarded it's highest honor, the Edison Medal. Tesla, being Tesla, accepted graciously. When he ran out of money, in order to pay his secretary and helper, he cut the gold medal in half, giving one part to each employee. By Oscar's estimation, this is the gold standard in "Fuck You's".

Edison was the Victorian era's Steve Jobs. I remember having a lesson in third grade about "how great he was", what a marvelous inventor and peerless visionary and blah blah blah. All rubbish. Since that lesson (which was approved by the state curriculum, I might add!), every fact about Edison I encounter just further reinforces the unpleasant reality that he was an insufferable douche.

I had no idea Mr Edison was in favour of puppy mills, but frankly this new information does not surprise me in the slightest.

infinite zest - 2015-02-03

Are you guys talking about the doc that was on PBS? I wasn't paying super-close attention but there was no mention whatsoever of Tesla, or that he raped and killed a girl in 1890 which is not true. That he raped and killed a girl in 1890.

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-02-03

Yes. I did learn some new facts about this loathesome man. The child bride(s). First wife dying at 26 from "nervous exhaustion" or some such nonsense ( I can't tell if IZ is promulgating a meme, or referring to this fact, or both ). His ten years digging a giant hole in the ground after being publicly whupped by that faggy Tesla fellow. That last bit made me smile. The image of a butthurt Edison crawling around under a giant rock crusher on some barren wasteland in New Jersey... Greek style pennance for fucking with Prometheus,

Boomer The Dog - 2015-02-03

I like how they spell Mutt with one T, as MUT, I didn't know that anyone ever did that.

Boomer

EvilHomer - 2015-02-03

Maybe they wrote it that way to be funny? I don't know if that was a standard spelling back then; I'm trying to look it up now, but I'm having a devil of a time! Are there any search operators which will prevent search engines from trying to be clever and appending an extra T on the end of "Mut"?

EvilHomer - 2015-02-03

Also, off-topic, but... the fuck?! Google has changed '+' from the "AND" operator, to the "search our shitty social network that nobody ever uses unless we force them to" operator?!

I know Google has had a long history of resenting their users having the power to circumvent all their fancy mind-reading, search-bubble, you'll-click-where-we-tell-you-to techniques, but this is ridiculous. RIDICULOUS, I SAY! rabble rabble

Boomer The Dog - 2015-02-04

The Pit-Boolean Empire. I don't use those operators much on search these days. Maybe Goog sees that people use them less and depreciated them, then hooked on a free ride to their + services. Not cool, I don't like their behavior in lots of ways, and hope for the return of the Microsoft kingdom. That barked, I have Droid on my tablet.. At least I use Firefox.apk

Now that I look at the screen again, they did so some fanciful spellings on some of those Dogs, so maybe they did just drop the T. Decades ago a guy wrote a book about changing the spelling of the English language in a radical way, dropping letters like that and making words spell the way they sounded, as English was considered a hard language to learn.

EvilHomer - 2015-02-04

Oh my god, Pit-Boolean, that is perfect! If I ever start an information technology company, that will be my name!!! :D

I actually haven't really used Google very much in recent years. I stopped using Google once they started using mandatory censorship filters, and I stopped using Bing when they began redirecting searches for "Pedobear" to mental health sites, and quite rudely I might add. I mostly use DuckDuckGo at the moment (sometimes Startpage), and on those occasions where I do want to search with one of the major engines, I just use Duckie's ! operator instead (which allows you to submit your query anonymously, directly from DDG to the engine in question; !g for Google, !bi for Bing Images, etc).

Boomer The Dog - 2015-02-06

Hi Homer, glad that I could get you with something.. :) You could name it that, and it kind of fits with being King Of The Dogs before, and you like Pit Bulls.

I didn't know that Bing redirected searches, maybe the kid filter is on, but even then it doesn't make sense, since Pedobear is just a meme. Maybe it locks on to Pedo-anything..

I wish that search engines had never gotten involved in structuring search results in the first place, under the idea that they're only indexing content, not creating it.

I've never tried DuckDuck, but I use Startpage all of the time instead of regular Goog. My alternate search was Dogpile for a while, it's meta search, but the way their search links are structured leads me to believe that they're in bed with the engines they use, or are storing click data themselves. The last straw with them is when they had a whole page of sponsor links above the real results for one search I did.

Thanks for the tips, I'll check it out.
