One of my friends in highschool was a Korean kid. After graduating, he went back home and joined the South Korean Army. He was in their special forces. He sent us this letter once, while he was off training for jungle warfare operations. He said it was fun and he was getting paid well, but he deeply regretted enlisting, because military life cut heavily into his Star Craft time, and he feared that without practice his online ranking would plummet.

True story.

I know his pain.

Conscription in South Korea's army is mandatory for all men, unless you have a medical problem. Though I always thought that army bases over there should have at least one PC Bang. It seems cruel to take them away.

Yeah, you're right RocketBlender, I should not have said "enlisted", as that implies choice. I think his core regret was joing a highspeed MOS, one that kept him training in the field a lot, rather than picking a job that let him sit around in an office all day. He'd always been a bit of an overachiever - varsity wrestling team, break-dance squad captain (Koreans and break-dancing, another stereotype that is actually somewhat true) - but I guess his commitment wavered once he realized what he had to give up. As the Prophets of Auir once said, ye cannot serve two masters.

Of course, this was back in like '02, when Starcraft was at it's height (at least here in the US). I'm not sure what the current state of the scene is like in Korea; are they still playing 'craft? Did they transition to 'craft 2? Obviously gaming addiction is still considered a social problem over there, but judging by this commercial, the main offender is... what? DarkSouls nowadays, I'm guessing?

^ RoUS, sorry. Don't know why I read that as RocketBlender. Probably a bit dehydrated; was up late last night playing Crusader Kings II for like sixteen hours straight.

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-02-06

With a different voice-over, this could easily be a pro-video game commercial.

They're playing Dark Souls. It sure made me addicted. I had no life for like 3 months.

To this day it still fucking amazes me that there is a South Korean TV channel that's been running for about fifteen years now that is nothing but people playing Starcraft, and as of recently, League of Legends.

I mean Jesus Christ, not one, but two people that I know of, actually died from playing Starcraft non-stop for so long that their bodies just couldn't go on anymore, and they were both in South Korea. One played for 50 hours straight, the other for 650 hours straight. WTF South Korea?

Although to be fair, the 650 hours guy was actually a Chinese guy who emigrated there.

Those "gamed to death" stories always bothered me, you never find out *why* they died. Dehydration? Heart condition? Sepsis?

dairyqueenlatifah - 2015-02-07

The 50 hour guy suffered a heart attack, which arguably could have had nothing to do with the 50 hours of no food or sleep.

Don't know about the other one.
