if you need a soundtrack for your italian splatterfilm or dos shareware, look no further!

If this is a NAMM convention presentation, does that mean that NBC will give the guy playing the customer his own late night show seven years later?

(In reference to this 1986 NAMM video: http://youtu.be/CSk3FvynZ-Q )

I love how the first dude pronounces "timbre" like "tim-bruh" and the second one pronounces it like the wolf but neither sounds like how it's pronounced in terms of music (which is more like "tam-ber").

And, stars for yet another useless, overpriced Akai product, and a lack of rehearsal or even knowing the basics about the product being demonstrated.

RocketBlender - 2015-02-09

As long as we're on the subject of demonstration videos, what the hell is going on in the hopper?

The Mothership - 2015-02-09

How is this not an Old Zircon submission?

Braze - 2015-02-09

plot twist they're both Old Zircon

What the fuck is going on the in the synth industry. Jesus christ, every 10 minutes some company is coming out with the EXACT SAME FUCKING THING. A compact synth module with sequencer, faux analog sound, dumbass knobs that take up all kinds of room to look retro, and the usual bog-standard list of basic features and a horrible user interface. Korg's Electribe is pretty much the final word on this shit and it wasn't even that great. The market is absolutely glutted with this shit.

For 0 you could buy an iPad Mini or something, and then get access to dozens of fucking amazing apps that perform and do shit light years beyond what these manufacturers are making these days.
I haven't touched a physical instrument in years...2 iPads are doing more for me than hardware and a PC has ever done.

Void 71 - 2015-02-10

The synth industry has always worked that way. In the '90s it was shitty romplers. In the early '00s it was shitty virtual analog synths. Now it's shitty analog synths. You need to spend thousands of dollars piecing together a boutique modular if you want a decent hardware synth, but there's really no point in doing that with all of the software options available, most of which can easily be had for free. Assuming you aren't a bored millionaire like Aphex Twin, of course.

badideasinaction - 2015-02-10

It's getting worse. The Moog modular re-issues and the accompanying price tag says that the era of the Blues Lawyer is about to be replaced by the Prog Lawyer.

I love Ableton live and I do have iPad stuff for music, but I still like hardware, if only because it gives my aging hands a break from keyboards and mice. That being said, I did learn the hard way that modular is a money pit.

Spastic Avenger - 2015-02-10

Dave Smith at least is doing some nice stuff and isnt beholden to the cult of voltage. My god, there is no excuse for VCOs (if they are VCOs) to be that unstable these days. Moog's are so stable theyre in tune 15 seconds after turning on the sub phatty, and have been complained about for being TOO stable.

fluffy - 2015-02-10

I like using my iPad as a control surface to Logic, and a hammer-action MIDI controller for most of my realtime note input (or my Wacom tablet for when I just want to draw notes like a lazy asshole). I hardly ever touch real synths anymore, except my SIDstation when I want a very specific C64 sound that is too annoying to get out of one of Logic's many available analog-modeling softsynths.

The only appeal I can see to hardware is because it looks better on stage than a bunch of generic MIDI controllers, but this kind of shit isn't used for performances in the first place. Maybe people just really want to pretend to be Wendy Carlos and spend all their time sequencing everything 8 notes at a time or something, because they're too busy being "vintage" to actually come up with new music ideas on their own.

I do have a shitload of physical instruments but they're things like guitars and mandolins and cellos and stuff, things which you can't easily model via keyboard control (and which let you do all sorts of cool shit by playing them "wrong" or by detuning them or making noises with the parts that aren't traditionally used to make noise or whatever).

BHWW - 2015-02-10

Wait a minute, Timbre...Wolf? I get it! Ha ha, yes, I get things.

Spastic Avenger - 2015-02-10

So, it's a Korg Mono/Poly with awful filters and unstable oscillators. The Rhythm Wolf is a pile of poop too; the Korg Volca series does most of what this does for a lot cheaper and with a much better sound.
