How does TED choose its speakers these days? It seems like a growing majority are performance artists that just get away with slipping in because they are quirky as opposed to informed.
This is TEDx - which is basically an independently organized DIY TED that anyone can do. You need to get a license from the actual TED organization but from what I gather they'll give it to anyone with a vaguely coherent pitch and an overinflated sense of self worth.
The short of it: TED didn't choose this smug weirdo, she chose TED.
Well.... whatever you think of her ability to do 71 accents in 29 seconds, everything else she does is a shit-show of over-confident mediocrity and narcissism.

I suspect she can't be directed, in anything, unless she directed the performance herself. She has the air of an actor who acts on her own terms and won't ever take even the smallest amount of advice or learning unless it was something she came up with. It's too bad since she does have some decent talent and is cute as hell.
It could just be an improv comedian demonstrating Tedx's lack of quality control by fast talking their way onstage then delivering a bizarre "Onion Talks"-style performance. It wouldn't be the first time that has happened!
