drug reps are usually full of shit and waste so much of our time.

Sanest Man Alive - 2015-02-13

My brother is a drug sales rep. I can attest to the veracity of oddeye's statement.

My mom was an audiologist and she sent me this, although I'd already seen it. It wasn't her job to recommend hearing aids but she still had to attend the conventions, and she said that the Advair one is actually pretty low-budget compared to some of what she saw. For hearing aids. That being said, I was going through a really rough patch back when I was 21, dealing with the deaths of both my grandmas and considering dropping out of college or contemplating worse. It got so bad that I couldn't go into classes, work or even the store without several drinks. Nothing's worse than turning 21 and being too self-conscious to even want to be SEEN at a bar because of other people. So I saw a doctor and she prescribed me.. something.. started with a "Z" but not Zoloft, and it actually helped a lot. And in the next couple of months I was married and got my GPA back up to par, so I really think that doctor had my best interests in mind. When I asked if I could stop the medication, she gave me specific instructions on how to do so, unlike some doctors who I imagine have some pharmaceutical rep standing next to them with a gun pointed to their head.

IZ, did you mean Xanax? The first "x" is pronounced like a "z" so it sounds like "zan-ex".

Xanax is a popular anti-anxiety drug. Zoloft is more for depression or OCD, although it can also be used for anxiety.

(There are a lot of people in my family suffering depression and/or bipolar disorders, so I'm familiar with some of these, at least by name.)

infinite zest - 2015-02-14

You know, it might have been xanax. I posted a couple of days ago a xanax-related story about this xanax-addicted girl and how I couldn't relate to her because I never took the drug, but it was so long ago that I wasn't paying attention to whatever the doctor was saying. It was basically like "take this.. sure" and that was that.

OH boy, I can't wait to finish my residency. All the ham sandwiches I want!

Probably one of myriad reasons why I it's good that I didn't want go into the medical field, but I don't think I could eat lunch and then go back to doing the things doctors do. If you've watched the PBS show Doc Martin, that's pretty much me (it's not a spoiler but he's this really good doctor who pukes at the sight of blood.) Movie blood's fine, real blood and other liquids, not so much with me. So I'd probably just take those lunches home and re-heat them as dinner, or pretend that I made the food myself to impress a dinner date. "Wow, not only are you a doctor, but my you can cook." Yeah baby..

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-02-13

haha, you're such a strange fellow IZ

oddeye - 2015-02-15

Give me your name and npi, I will be tracking your kickbacks JBF. I expect at least 1/6 of your meals offered to me free of charge. I will decline but the sentiment is what's important.

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-02-15

It would be terrible for my career to let any of you know where I live and work.

TeenerTot - 2015-02-13

Lunch IS awesome.

Oktay - 2015-02-13

Ask your doctor if forehead swastikas are right for them.

That guy - 2015-02-13

-2 for simplifying what off-label use is by only talking about the bullshit side of it.
It would have taken 5 more seconds to mention that it's also an important part of the cutting edge of medicine. Sometimes that "cutting edge" is scientifically viable or proven and the FDA approval is still a decade away, yet it's still declared "off label".

The worst cases of non-approval for a better, cheaper drug being used "off-label" are actually part of the FDA being cozy with big pharma and denying that off-label use and forcing doctors to use the more expensive drug.
Drug AAA costs 50 times Drug XYZ, is a little less effective than it, and is approved by the FDA, while XYZ is not, IN PART because of the power of big pharma. Do you really want your doctor not prescribing XYZ to you because it's "off-label"??

Painting an over-simplified picture is not what I support about shows like John Oliver.

Old_Zircon - 2015-02-13

I can't watch this yet but years ago I shared a second job with a guy whose day job was at a health insurance provider in Cambridge at least partially owned by the Bush family (one of Dubya's cousins was his boss) and his explanation of the system of penalties and incentives that the used specifically to make sure people got the absolute bare minimum of treatment necessary to maximize the insurance company's profits was disusting enough for me to give this 5 stars just for reminding me.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-02-13

Coconut water tastes like celery.

I don't think that was coconut water you drank, Mr. Oliver.

Anyway, if we keep insisting on forcing doctors to take on crushing debt in order to get their medical training, of course they're going to be looking for supplemental income.

infinite zest - 2015-02-14

Celery = Cereal Milk and Ball semen? I will eat my ants on a log in silent protest! Shit.. celery really is gross and harder to digest than either of those two :)

TeenerTot - 2015-02-14

Ants on a log! Haven't heard that phrase in years.

gravelstudios - 2015-02-14

celery and peanut butter are one of those food combinations that you wouldn't expect to work, but it does.

Old_Zircon - 2015-02-14

If grape nm nuts could sweat, coconut water is what the sweat would taste like.

Old_Zircon - 2015-02-14

Celery tastes great though, you lunatics.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-02-14

I agree. I'm just saying coconut water has a mostly celery-like taste, not what John Oliver described.
