infinite zest - 2015-02-17 I seem to remember a period of time when EA were putting out equally shitty quality games in the 80s, like just because they had a couple of licenses and names they could use. Of course there were some blockbusters (mostly the unlicensed ones) that helped but it would've been interesting to see what LJN would've been like if it had begun a decade or so later with a lot more development manpower and resources at their disposal.
I remember Spirit of Speed 1937 very well.. I had to reluctantly review it and acclaim were pretty much bribing me for a good review with all the shit they sent. Instead I just focused on the mystery of LJN and gave the game itself a very ambiguous review (luckily we didn't use grades or stars) and avoided the mentioning the game almost completely.

I'd love to see someone make a better version of that SPIRIT OF SPEED 1937 game (made by some outfit called Broadsword Interactive but published by Acclaim under the LJN label, officially the final LJN game ever according to this video).
Having a racing game that's focused on 1930s racers was an awesome idea even if the execution, from what I've seen of it, is subpar compared to other fantastic Dreamcast racers like TEST DRIVE: LE MANS or FERRARI F355 CHALLENGE: PASSIONE ROSSA. If I saw it at a thrift store for under , I'd probably still pick it up, though.

infinite zest - 2015-02-17 heh.. w/r/t my comment above, that was pretty much what I said about the game: that it was cool to see a throwback like that with so many people trying to out-Gran Turismo/NFS each other.. for a critic I was probably too lenient, but everybody at Acclaim was so nice to me even if they churned out some shit.

LJN gets a lot of flak for their garbage video games. This is an important reminder that mistakes aren't always the fault of just one.
I also think "Nightmare on Elm Street" was one of their better games. Maybe that's because it was one of the titles Rare developed.

Scrimmjob - 2015-02-18 LJN takes a lot of heat, but there were many publishing houses that released just as steady a stream of shit games for the NES. Jaleco comes to mind. Even the shittiest still came up with some good stuff occasionally, which made deciding whether or not to rent a game even more frustrating.
