James Woods - 2015-02-18

Totes :(

If you're white, this will hit you in the upper leg. If you're black, it's going into your skull.

James Woods - 2015-02-18

For evil obvs

James Woods - 2015-02-18

Might I add, it's evil because it's the wrong solution and the real problem... is braoder..issue.... money... bullshit... murica...#racismisover...

chairsforcheap - 2015-02-17

i dumbly didn't realize how obvious the state would be... fuck Missouri. Fuck the midwest. I spent a year there and became an alcoholic and a guy with a camo hat punched the living shit out of me at a party. I know it was one of you

infinite zest - 2015-02-18

I spent 8 years in Wisconsin and became a bit of an alcoholic. There's some pretty spots up there and a whole bunch of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture, but can't say too much else about it. Hot shitty summers and freeze-your-tits-off winter. What's the deal with the flying pig in St. Louis by the way? I've heard many explanations.

TeenerTot - 2015-02-18

I'm guessing the flying pig is just a pork recreation of the slinger (another St. Louis invention). Also, St. Louis is responsible for toasted ravioli, gooey butter cake, the St. Paul sandwich, and Tums antacids.

infinite zest - 2015-02-18

Haha yeah, I've heard of the sandwich, but there's this weird mythology about the Pigasus itself. I've only been through the St Louis airport but it's all over the place in the news kiosks and stuff. Like, the most obvious explanation was someone saying "when pigs fly," kind of like New York is called the Big Apple because of horse racing, but I've heard at least 30 different conflicting etymological explanations for the flying pig from St. Louisians (?)

TeenerTot - 2015-02-19

I think we just threw our loves of "The Spirit of St. Louis" and pork steaks into a blender.

Prickly Pete - 2015-02-18

I saw this story about a month ago and, no bullshit, the argument I read against it was that if we start using these then cops will be encouraged to use them in situations where they wouldn't have shot otherwise. Yeah, no fucking shit. We shouldn't have them cause if we do then we, gasp, might use them?? OF COURSE they're going to use them in situations where they wouldn't have shot. That's the entire fucking point. That's why they were invented. But we're living in this society now where every side is treated just as validly. Nothing can objectively be a good idea anymore.

Bobonne - 2015-02-18

Blame pigs using tasers as torture devices at the drop of a hat.

Bobonne - 2015-02-18

(I should note that I'm not agreeing with the people who were saying they were a bad idea, just pointing out that, yes, cops DO have a proven track record of misusing tools meant to ensure less deaths in the course of their work. Because fuck cops.)

Nominal - 2015-02-18

and that's exactly why a lot of "non-lethal" options are a bad idea. Cops start freely using them in situations where no action at all would have been the better course. Witness the horrific abuse of tasers and the ear drum shattering sound cannons used against harmless Occupy gatherings. Go back to the 60s and see what a great idea fire hoses were. Or the videos of cops firing beanbag/plastic bullets at people with cameras.

As far as this particular device goes; it's worthless. Cops everywhere have adopted the mentality of emptying the entire clip (then 2 more) at the slightest whiff of imagined danger. Laugh at loud at the "running at you with a Rambo knife" scenario. No cop in the country would only fire once at that.

oddeye - 2015-02-18

They really should have demoed it against a peaceful homeless man with 2 pocket knives.

Syd Midnight - 2015-02-19

I think taser darts should also release fast acting tranquilisers, so if the cops shoot you by mistake at least you get a sweet buzz out of the deal

yogarfield - 2015-02-18

Double tap.

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-02-18

This is stupid. Everyone knows that you need 10+ bullets to the head to stop an assailant!

Robin Kestrel - 2015-02-18

Seriously. It would be a very rare situation where the LEO would shoot one shot, actually HIT with it, and then wait and see if that disabled the "threat".

This seems to be more of a PR thing where the cops will be able to say "well, we TRIED using less lethal force".

infinite zest - 2015-02-18

Couldn't agree with you more. I think it could be useful if it was automatically equipped to every cop's gun (and probably not bright orange) as the first shot.. the whole idea of being like "oh wait hold on I gotta put this on" is about as awkward as putting on a condom.

I'm surprised we haven't come up with more stuff like the goo that Spiderman uses for cops. Maybe I'm living in my own little scifi bubble, but if it came out of a regular-looking gun and the threat was still there (the cops would still carry regular guns but have a choice) it'd at least scare the assailant to think twice about his or her actions with a potentially lethal weapon pointed at them.

Or just use the gravity gun from Half Life 2.

infinite zest - 2015-02-18

I mean, toy companies had this figured with squirtguns 20 years ago, for better or worse (mostly worse).

oddeye - 2015-02-18

I quite like it. First shot to break a kneecap etc. then you can plug away if needed.

I can totally see "accidentally" shooting twice and shit though but what's different about that?

Meerkat - 2015-02-18

It absolutely could kill you, so let's encourage cops to use it!

Also cops usually empty their clips because their first 1 - 3 shots miss.

oddeye - 2015-02-18

Cops are there to PROTECT and SERVE and like charity, that starts with yourself.

If this device saves even 1 cop then it's worth it.

Nominal - 2015-02-18

if emptying a clip into every traffic stop saves even one cops life, then I say blast away!

namtar - 2015-02-18

The positives of this device will outweigh the negative only if police are also equipped with functioning body cameras.

Otherwise, the police will most certainly use it in situations where it isn't needed, or will shoot again because the suspect was "charging" them.

Raggamuffin - 2015-02-18

They should make a bullet that makes a big inflatable police officer, so the guy with the knife will attack that instead.

Ursa_minor - 2015-02-18

hahahaha

Snakeweapon - 2015-02-18

I would much rather yell "MindPsyche!" than "LessLethalLessLethal!" before firing that thing.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2015-02-18

It's a good idea, to find ways that officers can shoot people without killing them. I just don't see this particular device making much of a difference.

I wonder how long it will take for someone to end up brain damaged/brain dead/blind/paralyzed from one of these things.

oddeye - 2015-02-18

far longer than any of those things from a regular bullet

dairyqueenlatifah - 2015-02-18

Touché.

oddeye - 2015-02-18

However if sticking "less-lethal" on the label makes officers use it needlessly than yeah, there could be more serious yet entirely avoidable injuries.

and yeah, there probably are better ways to take someone down that doesn't amount to a metal baseball being fired at your skull.

Syd Midnight - 2015-02-19

Why cant criminals compromise and start using less lethal weapons too, the cops wouldnt have to kill you if you were like robbing a bank with pepper spray and a stun gun
