Spock is a dynamic character, who has been gradually learning to embrace his human side ever since the first Star Trek movie 30 years ago. This scene represents the completion of that evolution . Except for a brief appearance as a hologram image in the sequel, this was Nimoy's final appearance as Spock, and he's shown telling his younger self to "put aside logic", and "do what feels right". I wish that we could see more of this warm, wry, elderly Spock, who is apparently on his way to becoming the founder of a new Vulcan civilization.

Incidentally, I love the Abrams Star Trek, but it bugs me that the destruction of Vulcan wasn't given the tragic weight it deserved. At the end, everybody's happy that the earth was saved, but Vulcan's catastrophic demise is hardly mentioned. That's sort of callous, and it's also a lost opportunity. The destruction of Vulcan should have been mythic

I thought Darth Vader blew up Vulcan in the first one?

I liked how they handled Spock in the first one, but Into Darkness was just some of the worst writing ever in a major Hollywood film.
"How can we convince the audience that Khan is a really bad guy since we so shittily wrote him in this film?"
"I know, we'll have someone place a phone call to Spock so he can TELL everyone he's a bad guy!"

Maybe it's the odd numbered films that will be the good ones this time around.

The action-based Trek is entertaining. I especially enjoy Simon Pegg as Scotty, but three films in, the sense of diminishing returns is palpable. The first movie, with the rebooting of the timeline that made anything possible, and the great surprise of Spock Prime, the 2009 film was emotionally and intellectually compelling and seemed promising to me. The second film neatly played with the altered timeline by inverting the ending of The Wrath of Khan, with Spock watching Kirk die from radiation poisoning, which was cool but not as compelling as the mind blowing surprises of the first. Beyond was like some of the more recent MCU, post-Endgame, a well-made and competently acted action movie featuring familiar and beloved characters. The biggest surprise was gay Sulu. I love this stuff, but it's not quite all that.

The beauty of the original Trek, from TV to film, is that it grew deeper and richer over decades, though not in a straight line.

This was fucking stupid, and new star trek is fucking stupid.

TeenerTot - 2015-03-01

I should totally 1-star this symbolic mark of the passing of a beloved actor because I'M SO EDGY.

It got a ton of praise solely on the appeal of pissing off Trekkies.

On its own, yes it was a terrible movie. The name "Star Trek" worked in distracting people that it was the exact same movie as Transformers with space ships instead of robots, complete with half the screen time consisting of NONONONOOONONONONO running around.

It made Nemesis look like Wrath of Kahn.

I don't have to be edgy to think something is stupid when it's actually stupid. Quinto can die too.
