Is that how radiation looks? A bunch of particles jumping off (and disturbing the cloud chamber's medium)?

Science is awesomoe.

Gmork - 2015-03-08

*awesome fuck

memedumpster - 2015-03-08

You can build one of these for yourself to detect cosmic rays. This is near the top on my list of "shit I would so build just to have if I had an outlook on life worth participating in."

Beyond awesomoe.

My next bar is going to be called Awesomoe's

Cloud chambers are great. There's a big one at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, where you can see background radiation and cosmic rays in action.

Watch the sides and corners and you can see the occasional bit of cosmic ray debris zip past.

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-03-09

The subtitle said it was pitchblende, which is a naturally occurring, uranium oxide bearing ore; IIRC uranium, either enriched or depleted, is pretty safe to handle; things only get nasty once it goes through a reactor and you get plutonium and unstable isotopes mixed in that things get tricky or when it gets powderized and inhaled or ingested..

RockBolt - 2015-03-10

As long as you don't eat, you'll be fine.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-03-09

Yes, indeed. You hear the most outrageous lies about it. Half-baked goggle-box do-gooders telling everybody it's bad for you. PERNICIOUS NONSENSE! Everybody could stand a hundred chest X-rays a year. They ought to have them, too.

When they cancelled the project it almost did me in. One day my mind was full to bursting. The next day - nothing. Swept away. But I'll show them. I had a lobotomy in the end.

Gmork - 2015-03-09

Finally, an end to mad deadly world-wide communist earphone slavery!

betabox - 2015-03-10

Which end?

mouser - 2015-03-09

I want this as a lava lamp.
