This man has two Bachelors degrees, a Masters degree, and will soon have a PhD in real life. He can beat every one of your asses. And he's a brony!

Is this going to be a new gimmick for him? I understand the WWE thought better of the whole "shucking and jiving preacher" gimmick they hinted at last year; letting Dr Woods be the intelligent, highly-cultured, gender-confident "cool geek" that he is IRL would be awesome!

EvilHomer - 2015-03-10

Also, I remember there were rumors of him being a brony before, but this is the first time it's been 100% confirmed in an official broadcast, yes?

Change - 2015-03-10

there are exceptions to every rule

Kid Fenris - 2015-03-10

If he's so smart, why isn't he wearing a Twilight Sparkle or Wind Whistler shirt?

Cena_mark - 2015-03-10

I don't think its a gimmick. This is just a clip from the WWE youtube channel with him discussing how he'll win a videogame contest.
The truly brilliant are Applejack fans.

EvilHomer - 2015-03-10

He's wearing a Rainbow Dash shirt because Rainbow Dash is best pony. He wouldn't wear a Twilight Sparkle shirt, because he doesn't have to prove to people that he's an egghead. And he isn't wearing an Applejack shirt, because they don't make shirts with background ponies on them.

Cena_mark - 2015-03-10

The Applejack is a background pony nonsense is older than Princess Celestia.

Apple - Jack,
will whack,
your crack,
so take that,
back,
to your door,
tell your boys,
"I ain't a real bronie no more"

SERVED, CENA STYLE. 619

An association fallacy is an inductive informal fallacy of the type hasty generalization or red herring which asserts that qualities of one thing are inherently qualities of another, merely by an irrelevant association. The two types are sometimes referred to as guilt by association and honor by association. Association fallacies are a special case of red herring, and can be based on an appeal to emotion

EvilHomer - 2015-03-11

That's a great point, Albuquerque! People are always assuming that bronies are a bunch of weird, creepy losers, but any association between losers and bronies is tangential at best. Yes, there are some loser bronies, but their broniness has no causally relevant connection with their loserness.

HA!

Awesome. Take my view with a grain of salt, since I haven't really followed wrestling since the late 90s, and have little knowledge of MLP, but it never seemed like the two would get along. And yet I know of at least 2 of you guys who identify as both Beonies and WWE fans. One of the reasons I stopped watching WWF was because of the bro factor: I didn't mind it in the 80s and early 90s: wrestling didn't objectify women any more than any other sport, but then came the pimp train and talented female wrestlers being reduced to something close to Foxy Boxing. It's changed since then I'm sure, but it is an interesting combination to me.

infinite zest - 2015-03-10

Sorry, autocorrect. Why would autocorrect correct to a non existent word?

EvilHomer - 2015-03-10

Sad to say, but the lot of female wrestlers has actually gotten worse. The Attitude Era, yeah, it had Foxy Boxing and the Ho Train, but it also had Lita and Chyna, who is still the only female wrestler to have ever had a respectable shot at "the boys'" titles. The PG Era has stripped out a lot the sexiness (the sexiness wasn't negative, in and of itself), but it's also stripped out nearly everything else the divas could do. Vince and Pals merely traded the Whore for the Madonna.

As for MLP and the WWE, they would actually work really well together! Vince is big on making kid friendly entertainment, which MLP is. And MLP is a show with a lot of heart and determination, values that would resonate with any wrestler. To be a champion, you need to be positive, you need to be a winner - the stuff that My Little Pony is all about! There aren't many positive role models or enjoyable, values-oriented entertainment left anymore; wrestling and ponies are a rare breed these days, and would be stronger if they stuck together.

Hopefully now that Dr Woods has come out as the first openly brony wrestler, we'll see John Cena leave the stable, too. Just think of how much it'd help his Make A Wish efforts!

infinite zest - 2015-03-10

It'll be interesting to see what happens. The last tie-in I remember was WWF and Ridley Scott's Gladiator. That was kinda in the pre-wrestlers-as-actors-in-serious-roles days (with the exception of Roddy Piper in They Live it was mostly Hulk Hogan as a nanny, a mom, shit like that), and most WWF fans didn't like the movie, not because it was a bad movie, but because it was false advertising. And I don't blame 'em. The trailer had nothing but the (brief) action sequences and a Kid Rock soundtrack and that's what they wanted. Like, if the Fast and the Furious only had one chase and was under the speed limit, fuck yeah I'd be pissed.

But this makes more sense for the exact reasons you outlined. The combination might seem a little bit weird at first, not just because of the peaceful and fem-leaning nature of MLP but also because it's a "kid's" show that many adults like to watch, but who the fuck cares, right? I remember in the 90s black wrestlers were also pigeon-holed: The Godfather was the pimp, Nation of Domination was the "Black Panthers," and New Jack was the gangster rapper. Not a whole lot of variety there; even if pro wrestling's demographic may be more white than black, stereotypes like that definitely didn't help. It didn't have to be MLP but this is certainly a step in the right direction.

Plus, back to the "kids" thing, all the Scooby Doo/Flintstones Hanna Barbara stuff would seem insulting to me. I know plenty of adult MLP fans, but nobody my age (or anyone I know over the age of 12) gives a fuck about Scooby Doo.

EvilHomer - 2015-03-11

Yeah, I doubt Scooby Doo is still beloved of children, and to be honest even I'd pretty much forgotten The Flintstones ever existed. If the WWE wants to do tie-ins that kids and families will enjoy, they should be exploring franchises like My Little Pony or Adventure Time.

And the weirdest thing about MLP is that it isn't even that fem-leaning! It's got more fem-stuff than most other shows - it's one of the few shows that passes the Bechdel test, and it doesn't belittle traditional femininity, two things which hardly ever go together. But there are a lot of gender neutral and gender masculine concepts there, too; it's perfectly balanced, and in a natural manner which doesn't come off as if the writers are being preaching or attempting to fill a diversity quota. Hopefully, endorsements by respected scholar-athletes like Xavier Woods will help dispel some of the myths!

That guy - 2015-03-11

There is no excuse for brony vids here in 2015

Cena_mark - 2015-03-11

What's your problem with bronies and brony vids. Why you gotta be Racist?

EvilHomer - 2015-03-11

Yeah, there's no excuse for bigotry here in 2015.

That guy - 2015-03-11

WHY ARE YOU INTOLERANT OF WHO I AM?!!

EvilHomer - 2015-03-11

We tolerate you! You don't see us going out of our way to be jerks to you, do you?
