I normally hate shit like this but RDJ plays is so well it had to get the upvote+stars. He is literally *acting*.

Was very sweet. I do kinda wish he had asked "who's Robert?" though and stayed in Tony Stark mode

boner - 2015-03-14

If you really want the cynical version of this, watch the first scene in Maps to the Stars.

Oh shit! I wanted to see that and almost forgot about it completely. Eastern Promises was the last Cronenberg film I liked though.. I liked Cosmopolis the book but the movie was just kinda "meh" for me. Is it worth checking out?

boner - 2015-03-15

I'm a bit on the fence. It's a very fucked up movie, as you would expect. It is darkly funny. David Cronenberg was at the screening I went to (surprised many people in the audience -- it was not a festival or anything, it was the first night of its commercial release here in Toronto, last Hallowe'en) ANyway someone in the audience asked about the violence and Cronenberg acted like "what violence?" even though it contains bloody murder and suicide...

I feel like it could possibly be considered a classic movie in a few years, but it's too early to tell.

So will this robotic arm still be working 100 years from now?

This is great but in the grand scheme of things I'm wary of 3d printing, it seems like it's just going to accelerate the culture of disposablility and redundant consumption that is one of the most fundamental and most ignored problems in human society right now.

But, like, it's great that this kid got a robotic arm (and in this case, since he'll outgrow it, it's GOOD that it's more or less disposable).

Did...did you just piss on your own comment pissing on this video?

TheSupafly - 2015-03-14

I have no idea where most of the filament comes from for 3d printing, but it totally can be made of recycled materials, and recyclable 3d printed materials seem to be on its way. It seemed inevitable, c'mon.

Most FDM printing uses either ABS or PLA, both of which are incredibly recyclable. Current recycling facilities don't know what to do with FDM-printed scraps because prints tend not to be labeled but this isn't a problem.

PLA is also a bioplastic so it's already got a lot of built-in sustainability. It also seems to be winning the FDM race for a number of reasons (much more precise printing, and it's a phase-change material rather than a semifluid so you can do bigger prints without warping), although ABS is much less brittle and can be more easily repaired if it takes damage, and I find it much easier to work with after-the-fact.

And OZ, what the fuck is your problem with people being able to rapidly-prototype medical devices which vastly improve the quality of life?

The Great Hippo - 2015-03-15

Disposability and redundant consumption are serious issues (in the West, we throw away our iphones after a *year* of use!), but I don't think 3D printing plays into it; disposable culture is a product of planned obsolescence combined with creating a constant desire for the new. 3D printing involves neither of those (you can print things to last, and there's no incentive for businesses to create a desire for new things unless they're *selling* those new things).

I mean I think OZ's concerned over a thing that's real and bad, but I also don't think this is that thing.

(Also, this video is fucking awesome)
