If Iran arrests Christians for preaching, then shouldn't it be the American Christians realize baking gay wedding cakes isn't such a big deal?

Xenocide - 2015-04-04

Well, that's a great standard to hold yourself to. Why don't you put a nice big sign at the state border reading, "WE'RE NOT AS MUCH OF A THEOCRACY AS IRAN."

simon666 - 2015-04-04

I blame this kind of moral confusion on the relativism that came out of the humanities in the 80s and 90s. There. I said it.

Hooker - 2015-04-04

Yup. You said that vague and meaningless thing. Dare anyone stand against you on this?

Old_Zircon - 2015-04-04

First define "the humanities" and then we'll move on to defining morality, and then we can get started.

fedex - 2015-04-04

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2015-04-04

I'm not quite sure where the humanities got into this. Besides, the GOP has been doing this since the Cold War: If you're being mistreated, at least it's better than being in the Soviet Union. After 9/11, everything (especially torture) was justified based on your "enemy" doing things that were worse.

Which humanities course teaches that your morality meter is dictated by those you oppose?

Also, Republicans tended to watch too much "24" to the point where many assumed it was a documentary.

ashtar. - 2015-04-04

Uh, what I mean by that is that while there is some of what might be called moral relativism in the humanities (looking at you, post-structuralism), it's a minority view. It's generally been my experience (and the opinion of faculty that I've talked to) that the biggest stumbling block in teaching an intro ethics course is to overcome the moral relativism that the students already have absorbed from the culture. Yes, Jimmy, there is more to ethics than just people's opinion, and yes, your opinion can be wrong, and yes, you actually have to justify your beliefs. Shocking, I know.

If I were to hazard a guess as to where the ubiquitous relativism in our culture comes from, I'd say that religion has fallen out of public life in a meaningful sense (except for the dogmatic theocrats) and hasn't been replaced by anything. So, instead of thinking about ethical issues through a Christian lens, people just stopped thinking about them. I'd also blame the valorization of personal preference in consumerism, and the way that public life has been largely replaced with private consumption.

ashtar. - 2015-04-04

Also, I sort of doubt Tom Cotton is big into Derrida.

poorwill - 2015-04-04

I blame it on the teachings of Christ, actually - this is typical of his argumentation style (though inverted). If you don't see it you just haven't been paying attention.

simon666 - 2015-04-04

First: I admit it was a careless comment. I didn't watch the video and made the comment about 5 minutes after waking up and wasn't thinking clearly.

Second: Because I didn't watch the video, the comment was really getting at something I've seen in conservative conversation where a conservative position is defended with the 'that's your opinion and this is my opinion and there is no right or wrong, just opinions.' Having studied (yes I'm a bouncer) critical theory, Foucault, Derrida, Barthes, actual philosophy, and some post-colonial work one can see certain conservatives make similar argumentative moves as those influences just listed.

Third: It's a HUGE jump to go from that position from the second point to my first comment.

Fourth: I fucked up. Will you take me back?

simon666 - 2015-04-04

My second wasn't well spelled out, but I'm pretty sure I can defend it, however.

ashtar. - 2015-04-04

I agree with you, I think.

That guy - 2015-04-04

But simon, the real piece de resistance, is to turn around and argue for moral absolutes while hoping no one will find your other quotes. It's not like anyone would punch a congressman for being a complete and utter asshole. I think you usually get re-elected for getting caught for stuff like that.

Hooker - 2015-04-04

I forgive you, simon! You didn't make a post with meaning to other people and neither did anyone that argued against you!

ashtar. - 2015-04-04

Hooker: then we have had a successful academic debate. Congratulations, all!

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-04-04

The way this story has played out makes me proud to be an American.

Cena_mark - 2015-04-04

One thing that drives me crazy are chicken hawks like Tom Cotton who seem so eager to wage war on Iran. He did everything he could to shit on our diplomatic options. After over a decade of wars you'd think the American people would be tired of them. Even Hollywood has been producing war boner films like American Sniper and Lone Survivor. Where are the "war is hell" films?
Iran is completely surrounded by U.S. military installations and its east and western neighbors were invaded by the U.S. They don't want a fight, and were willing to talk.
Kind of off topic, but he and his ilk just sicken me.

Cena_mark - 2015-04-04

Oh wait. He's not a chickenhawk, he's a veteran. Still he wants to create more veterans so fuck him.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-04-04

I don't think he ever saw combat. He tried to become a commissioned officer and spent most of his military career in logistics.

Lurchi - 2015-04-04

breaking news: Tom Cotton is gay gay gay

NewHeavenSockman - 2015-04-04

this is actually speculated about alot in arkansas. it got especially high when, right when he was running for senate, he suddenly married some gop staffer no one had heard of.

having known socially awkward conservative scions like him in college, the more likely truth is that he's subsumed his sexual urges into some obsessive reverence towards procreation and creating more family units

Nikon - 2015-04-04

That's setting the bar pretty low.

ashtar. - 2015-04-04

He's right that we should focus on actual problems, rather than spending our time passing laws to protect our rights to not sell flowers arrangements to the gays.

misterbuns - 2015-04-04

Stop complaining about gay people Christians. You're lucky you're not in Iran where they imprison you for being Christian.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-04-04

Slippery little devil, isn't he?

"So, does this law open the door for discrimination against gays?"

"IRAN BAD! WE SMASH IRAN! IRAN BAD!"

IrishWhiskey - 2015-04-04

And in Kenya they are shooting Christians. That mean that Christians like yourself are about to shut up about being persecuted by gay people who ask not to be discriminated against? No? Didn't think so.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2015-04-04

Do you suppose some jackass used this logic during the women's liberation movement?

"I don't know why these women are complaining about lack of equal employment and voting rights. They should gain some perspective by looking at Afghanistan and Somalia. They stone their women to death for the crime of getting raped!"

dairyqueenlatifah - 2015-04-04

Oh and look, this guy is the same genius who said "Iran must be stopped, they already control Tehran!" a few weeks ago.

poorwill - 2015-04-05

MRA types bring that sort of shit up all the time to try to trivialise points raised by feminists. The women's liberation movement is still going - real unfortunate use of past tense there.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2015-04-05

I'm referring to the US.

poorwill - 2015-04-05

uhhhhh

betabox - 2015-04-06
