This is so 80s, I can taste it.

Old_Zircon - 2015-04-07

Welcome to the '10s, PoeTV.

Old_Zircon - 2015-04-07

Not that I can really outhipster anyone on this stuff, I didn't get in to it until like May or June of last year.

Old_Zircon - 2015-04-07

So like a year after it was dead.

yogarfield - 2015-04-09

heh heh

StanleyPain - 2015-04-07

I'm fascinated that people who are half my age have managed to capture the essence of the 80s in a way that people who actually lived through the 80s never quite have.

Good find.

Check out the following:

Com Truise Cyanide Sisters (full album)

And Miami Nights 1984 - Turbulence (full album)

Also check out Com Truise - Helena Beat (foster the people remix)

Noir Deco

This genre is also called "Synthwave" or "Chillwave"

Old_Zircon - 2015-04-08

Just FYI, synthwave and chillwave are both pretty different from each other and from vaporwave. Beyond the whole tumblr microgenre clique crap, I mean. They're really different in terms of sound, production and even when they peaked (chillwave's from like 6 or 7 years ago, although people still do it; it's more tied in with the whole Witch House thing).

in broad terms, synthwave/outrun/new retrowave = stuff that sounds like 80s italo horror scores, John Carpenter, that sort of thing, and is usually completely sequenced/performed. This stuff is pretty great.

chillwave I mostly ignored.

vaporwave = drone kids making chopped-and-screwed versions of 90s soft rock and library music as a joke around 2012, that then became a Real Thing on tumblr, had a completely bullshit writeup in Dummy by a hipster music critic in early 2013 that blew it up a lot (even though the article was so completely misinformed that he wrote a second one a few months later as an apology for how misinformed the first one is) and is now in to process of turning into French house under the name "Future Funk". Really sample based, although not completely anymore. If you want to troll vaporwave kids, start an argument about whether Blank Banshee is vaporwave or not, or just have a strong opinion about "vaportrap" one way or the other. Vaporwave is like 80%-90% bullshit but when it's good it's REALLY good. The community seems kind of insufferable, though.

Luxury Elite is great.

infinite zest - 2015-04-08

Oh. I kept reading at "vaporware." Makes sense now.

zurf - 2015-04-08

good writeup Old Zircon, I stumbled upon this stuff a while ago and was intrigued enough to try and find out more about it. You're right, the kids into his genre definitely seem young, intellectual, self-important and insufferable... they discuss the genre ad nauseum, thinking that it has some world-historical significance that it surely does not. But thats part of the charm of it.

For me, I like it because it is taking the primative technique of early hip hop, in which you rely heavily on a carefully selected sample. It just revives that approach 20 years later in a different medium - old rap songs ripped off forgotten obscure funk and soul music, vaporwave rips off new age muzak and shitty obscure 80s synthpop. Its a method to turn shit into gold, which is great, even though its lazy, 100% ripped off stolen music, with minimal effort put in besides slowing the sample down and maybe adding reverb or echo.

craptacular - 2015-04-13

I like all of these artists but I like Sunglasses Kid most of all, particularly his hits with Miranda Carey
