why

who thought this was a good idea

infinite zest - 2015-04-12

God. Thanks for reminding me that I made the right decision getting out of Broadway. I worked for Broadway Across America for 5 years and it pretty much killed music for me. I don't think this is the same one, but I had to sit through a video of a musical called Everyday Rapture, which featured a Nilsson song or two and was like a Rock of Ages for the 70s. Luckily we didn't get it, and opted for Wicked or some shit again. There's nothing worse than musical theatre.

Old_Zircon - 2015-04-12

Musical theater really is the worst, and so many of the people involved with it seem to be in this weird musical theater bubble that I just don't get. It seems to be closely allied with steampunk and the Tim Burton fandom these days, two, which pretty much forms the aesthetic axis of evil.

That guy - 2015-04-12

I'm assuming the worst. Nilsson was so weird and sad and talented in an unusual way that I can't even click on this shit.

BHWW - 2015-04-12

Musical theater, or rather quality musical theater in America has been dead for quite awhile now, what you've been hearing is it's death rattles drawn out in an excruciating and grotesque fashion over the years.

infinite zest - 2015-04-12

Yeah. I give it 20 more years, tops. Once the bridge and tunnel soccer moms get old and can't go anymore, it's tits up for broadway.

cognitivedissonance - 2015-04-12

I love Nilsson, but I need to rewatch "The Point" to get this out of my brain.

EvilHomer - 2015-04-12

Who the hell is Nilsson?

infinite zest - 2015-04-12

Dunno, but everyone's talkin' at him, something lime and coconuts

cognitivedissonance - 2015-04-12

I CAN'T LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE

IF LIVIN' IS WITHOUT YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOU

I CAN'T GIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE

EvilHomer - 2015-04-12

I do not recognize the reference cog is making, but I think I get IZ's reference. He was the guy who sang that song, I take it? Is he dead now or something?

baleen - 2015-04-12

He wrote a lot of the hit songs of the 60's and 70's, including pretty much everything the Monkees did. He was also an accomplished film composer.
He was the go to guy if you wanted a hit. He was a serious genius but way too weird for the mainstream public.

EvilHomer - 2015-04-12

>> including pretty much everything the Monkees did

OH NO!!!

Well, that changes everything. This is a goddamn tragedy.

infinite zest - 2015-04-12

When all's said and done, I think that Nilsson and Townes Van Zandt will be remembered as the greatest songwriters of their generation, and sadly the least appreciated when they were on planet earth, and most influential: most people would say Nilsson Schmilsson, but here's my favorite

https://youtu.be/H4rmbLWBQ6Q

Nilsson was a musician for musicians

infinite zest - 2015-04-12

whoops forgot to mention this was a cover album (with covers Nilsson did himself including your best friend Bob Dylan) but you probably got that. It's up there with Camper Van Beethoven's Fleetwood Mac Cover album of Tusk IMO

Old_Zircon - 2015-04-12

Throw in JJ Cale and I'm with you.

infinite zest - 2015-04-12

I think Lou Reed wrote most of those songs, except for arguably the Velvet Underground's most popular song, These Days, which was written by Jackson Browne, but yeah Cale's awesome.

infinite zest - 2015-04-12

Oh. Facepalm. Weird! I had no idea. Guess I always thought they were the same guy.

Lurchi - 2015-04-13

Without You was a Badfinger song first

Old_Zircon - 2015-04-13

Hoyt Axton belongs in here, too, and Ramblin Jack Elliott.

Old_Zircon - 2015-04-13

JJ Cale and John Cale aren't at all the same person, but John Cale was definitely the lynchpin of VU. They were OK after he left, but nowhere near as good as they were before. Other than Pale Blue Eyes, which is a really good song. Lou Reed worship is something I have never gotten, though.

Lurchi - 2015-04-13

Doug Yule was the man. Fuck you.

baleen - 2015-04-13

Lurchi - Never knew that. Thanks.
