Musical theater really is the worst, and so many of the people involved with it seem to be in this weird musical theater bubble that I just don't get. It seems to be closely allied with steampunk and the Tim Burton fandom these days, two, which pretty much forms the aesthetic axis of evil.

He wrote a lot of the hit songs of the 60's and 70's, including pretty much everything the Monkees did. He was also an accomplished film composer.
He was the go to guy if you wanted a hit. He was a serious genius but way too weird for the mainstream public.

whoops forgot to mention this was a cover album (with covers Nilsson did himself including your best friend Bob Dylan) but you probably got that. It's up there with Camper Van Beethoven's Fleetwood Mac Cover album of Tusk IMO

I think Lou Reed wrote most of those songs, except for arguably the Velvet Underground's most popular song, These Days, which was written by Jackson Browne, but yeah Cale's awesome.

JJ Cale and John Cale aren't at all the same person, but John Cale was definitely the lynchpin of VU. They were OK after he left, but nowhere near as good as they were before. Other than Pale Blue Eyes, which is a really good song. Lou Reed worship is something I have never gotten, though.
