Wow. Talk about life imitating The Onion.

For those of you who don't get the metajoke: http://gaygamer.net/2015/04/meet-kung-jin-mortal-kombats-first-gay -character/

StanleyPain - 2015-04-16

Well, sort of...this video was on the Onion about 2 years ago.

EvilHomer - 2015-04-16

Yes, that's the point. That's the metajoke.

EvilHomer - 2015-04-16

Although it was actually on The Onion six months ago, which leads me to wonder if The Onion writing staff had any inside connections with the NRS programming team. It's eerily prescient.

"Thunder god Raiden, a series staple, at one point tells Kung Jin that he should join the Shaolin monks to which he responds saying, “I can’t… They won’t accept…” In response Raiden tells him that the monks only care about “…what is in your heart, not whom your heart desires.”"

To which Kung Jim naturally responds by ripping out Thunder god Raiden's heart and slicing off half of his face.

eh.. should've watched the video first, almost the same joke. How is MKX by the way? I downloaded the iOS game for my phone, and was actually getting pretty far when it decided to lose all my data. It's worse than Simpsons Tapped Out, but the one Fatality that you get to do at the beginning is pretty.

fedex - 2015-04-16

EH I love you but please stop saying metajoke.

or meta-anything.

EvilHomer - 2015-04-16

It's good! There are some issues - losing save data (happened to me too), botched release on Steam, and a frankly puzzling undercurrent of self-censorship, which painfully highlights both President Obama's spot-on comments about offensiveness the other day, and American society's ongoing double-standards between sex and violence. But, on the whole, it's quite enjoyable! The Brutalities are actually really good, the new characters are cool, and the gameplay is remarkably polished for an AAA fighting game on its release week. They also included, as an unlockable bonus, a bunch of famous fanart pieces drawn by Kombatholics on DeviantArt and MK5.org, which is super-nice of them.

I actually wasn't paying much attention to the Kung Jin stuff until this morning before work, when I played through a Tournament Tower game with Lui Kang, and there was a little scene where Kung Jin said something like "You never accepted me!", to which Lui replied "I know all about your proclivities". Oooooh. Right. Gay. To the best of my knowledge, there's nothing in the game besides a couple vignettes that touch on his sexuality, and so far it's controversial with absolutely nobody (because duh)... but if I know the media and Mortal Kombat's marketing strategy, someone, somewhere, will try to force meme this into a Big Fucking Deal, probably by the end of the week.

infinite zest - 2015-04-16

replace one letter and regarrange two, and it becomes Kim Jong.

EvilHomer - 2015-04-16

Fedex- do I say metajoke a lot? I'm sorry. I have a problem with being too meta sometimes; I will try and be better.

infinite zest - 2015-04-16

Oh NM.. I spelled it wrong. I guess I was thinking it'd be funny if MK did something similar to SF's M. Bison.

EvilHomer - 2015-04-16

Another funny thing about Kim Jong is that he's basically Nightwolf, only not completely useless. And according to popular fan-lore (it was never confirmed, but it is almost universally accepted as fanon), Nightwolf was the first gay character in Mortal Kombat!

Talk about met-aaaah, fuck, sorry.

infinite zest - 2015-04-16

I might redbox it for the 360 and tool around. I already watched a compilation of all the fatalities but I still wanna play it. I like these fatalities a lot more than the last one; they're back to being fun!

EvilHomer - 2015-04-16

Did you see the Selfie fatality?

https://youtu.be/pVTv1pR0Vzg

infinite zest - 2015-04-16

The iOS game isn't the actual game, it's more of a free card game with generic characters like "Monk" and stuff. The higher you get you can unlock the main people, but the "kombat" is pretty much hitting a few buttons and doing a special move. You can't jump or duck. It plays a lot more like an RPG, but it's pretty fun for something that's free, although you can of course spend 100 bucks for lots of "kombat koins." Still unsure if there are any actual fatalities in the app though, besides a fun teaser at the beginning. And unlike other apps like Tapped Out, you can actually do something instead of just wait around for tomorrow.

I think I saw the Obama clip on censorship; was there any context w/r/t MKX? If so, and it's 1993 again, bring back Hypercolor, Hammerpants and Skorts!

infinite zest - 2015-04-16

sure did! The selfie's my favorite. Didn't want to spoil it in case you hadn't seen it yet. In the video I watched, Johnny and Sonya both do their fatalities on Cassie too. Johnny popping out of his daughter's chest made me laugh. What's weird is the classic characters' fatalities are actually my least favorite, but they're all pretty good.

infinite zest - 2015-04-16

Although Deadpool did pretty much the same thing..

https://youtu.be/SDyMlvlc-Dc

but I still think MKX's is better. I love the attention to detail on the Facebook clone.

infinite zest - 2015-04-16

Also Deadpool the game sucked. The cutscenes are pretty great though. Gives me hope for the movie.

EvilHomer - 2015-04-16

The censorship is in regards to sex and provocative attire. Mortal Kombat has had a pretty liberal attitude towards sexuality since at least Deadly Alliance; MK9 was pretty famous for having scantily clad fighters of both genders, and it was a trend that was widely expected to continue. Now, however, the development team seems to have caved in to pressure from conservative critics and a minority of sex-negative bloggers (possibly also Warner Bros) - all of the female characters wear pants, none of the male characters can so much as show a bare chest, and the proportions of everyone's figure has been shrunk down to "parent approved" levels. It's actually a selling point now, ad copy that got passed around to various video game journalism outlets a few months prior to release.

This phenomenon is most obvious with Mileena. In the last three games, Mileena had been fighting with increasingly fewer clothes on, a fact which made her quite popular in the fandom (actually sort of annoying, since I'm a Kitana mark, and I hate Mileena fanboys almost as much as I hate Applejack marks). Now, however, Mileena's almost totally covered up, with a more PG outfit than Chun Li c. 1990 - even Mileena's Fleshpits costume, only ever seen in flashbacks, is noticeably more conservative. AND YET, NRS has absolutely no qualms about doing the most horrifically violent and painful things to her, that I have ever seen in all my years as an MK fan. Rip her face off? Dissolve her in acid? Punch her head into her body then tear a hole in her chest so she can look out and watch as her opponent gloats in victory? Awesome, just make sure she's wearing pants.

Showing bare thighs is no longer OK: http://tinyurl.com/oflmg84
But THIS, this is totally fine: https://imgur.com/BZaiFbN?tags (spoiler warnings)

Again, near as I can tell, it's the result of a corporation finally caving in to a tiny minority of easily-offendable people, a shite state of affairs that is exactly what Obama was talking about.

EvilHomer - 2015-04-16

It's doubly bullshit, because I think a lot of gay gamers would have enjoyed seeing Kung Jin fighting monsters in a sauna towel or a Hard Gay leatherman outfit. The MK kommunity is still holding out hope that this oversight will be corrected in DLC and/or by the modding community, but for now it remains a black spot on an otherwise excellent game.

misterbuns - 2015-04-16

Hubba hubba dudebro

chumbucket - 2015-04-16

Wow. I am just amazed at how much production they put into just driving such a basic gag/message. That alone wins the internet.

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-04-16

The first openly gay fighting game character was Armadon from Primal Rage.

EvilHomer - 2015-04-16

You shut up about Primal Rage. Nobody cares about Primal Rage. Not even the scalie furs remember Primal Rage, and they were the target audience.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2015-04-16

I always thought it was Eagle from the original Street Fighter.

EvilHomer - 2015-04-16

To the best of my knowledge, Eagle's homosexuality has never been confirmed. He is at best closeted, and besides, he is a bouncer, and it is likely that his behavior is considered 'normal' for English bouncers.

Nominal - 2015-04-16

I guess their videos have finally caught up to the "content that reiterates the one joke headline" aspect of the articles.

Shoebox Joe - 2015-04-16

That would be valid if the character was dressed in a hilarious garish gay stereotype that only SNL could pull off!

But I doubt you could play on the delivery with out coming off as an opinionated, right-wing conservative jack ass.

Hooker - 2015-04-16

They're all gay characters.
