Not all nice things are necessarily pity, and not all pity is necessarily bad. Kid got short changed on her circumstances, so something nice happening to her isn't something worth getting bitter about, even if some people were doing to just to feel good about themselves.

The guy that donates food to the poor because he wants to help and the guy that does it for a tax write off are still resulting in the same thing, the poor get to eat.

It's unfortunately all too common for people with DD/IDs to be ostracized, even if everything seems fine at school and stuff. I do immersion for that population for a living, and grew up with a brother with high functioning autism. High school was hell for him: imagine people being nice to you at school because the teachers are looking and not understanding why they don't want to hang out afterwords.
