Pretty sure the wind forms the dunes. I could be wrong but I think this qualifies as a reaction-diffusion system -- wind pushes sand (diffusion), sand piles up and slows down diffusion (reaction).

Wind forms them even walking on them can change the way the sand is pushed enough that they can completely change shape from it in surprisingly short amount of time. Matters a lot more when they're coastal than when they're in a huge desert, probably, but it's a real concern around here.

I don't know if you can really draw a parallel between preserving coastal dunes and desertification.

That's Cerro Negro Volcano in Nicaragua. It's almost 2,000 feet of volcanic ash and rock. I was wearing a Luchador mask and goggles and green mechanic overalls, so I guess I looked like a really lame Ultraman enemy.

If you're ever in Nicaragua (which I recommend and is ridiculously cheap) in the Leon area, contact Quetzaltrekkers, they are an awesome organization of volunteers who will take you volcano boarding (or volcano hiking, or both) for a very reasonable fee and all proceeds go to help poor Nicaraguan children.
